This is the first of a new series of posts entitled “10 wallpaper selections”, which will consist entirely of (you guessed it) wallpaper images that I like and use. I decided to do this after the thought occurred to me that the desktop wallpaper for many people is the foremost image that they will see for many hours during the day (or most of the day for people, like myself, whose work primarily involves using a computer). I hope you enjoy these 10 selections.

SE-Screensaver is a free collection of screensaver themes packed inside a single installable screensaver file. Themes include several variations on the famous "The Matrix" screensaver, a 2D slideshow that can point to an image directory on your hard drive, animated fractals, analogue and digital clocks, kaleidoscopes, amoebas, snowfall, fractal trees, and others. There are nine different themes in all, many of which have several mini variations.

gDoc Creator: provides free PDF to Word conversion, as well as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to PDF or XPS
gDoc Creator is a free program that can perform a number of document format conversions, including converting PDF to Word (.DOC) format. It can convert PDF, XPS, or any MS Office format (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) into any of three formats: DOC, PDF, or XPS. It also can optionally install add-ins for MS Office that enable saving directly to PDF or XPS and will install ’virtual printers’ that enable converting any printable document into either PDF or XPS.
If you’ve been reading this blog then you likely have seen previous posts about converting PDF to Word using free software or services (see the comparative test of free PDF to Word options). Generally speaking there are some good solutions for performing PDF to Word conversions for free; however, the best ones tend to be free web services where you upload your document to a web site and download the converted file. For local conversions on your own PC, gDoc Creator is without a doubt one of the best free options available. Continue reading ..
Media Cope: a tabbed, all-in-one media player, converter, and cutter
Media Cope is a free program that supports a wide range of video and audio formats and combines a media player, audio and video converters and cutters, batch photo resizing and conversions, as well as a handful of other functions in a single tabbed interface.
This strangely named program is primarily a media player, but it also includes many other functions that typically are not bundled together, such as media conversions and cutting. There’s something really nice about having multiple functions in the same place within a unified interface; take a look at the screenshot above and notice the tabs and top, and you will immediately ’get’ the concept behind this program. Coffee: temporarily change the default program used to open any file type
Ever wanted to temporarily change the association of a file type or extension? Coffee is a small, free tool that can change the default applications used for opening any file type and allows for defining a primary as well as a secondary alternate program (the latter activated when launching a file and simultaneously pressing ALT).
Coffee was originally designed to enable changing file associations to portable apps but will work with installed apps as well. It will allow you to store your file type configurations and carry these portably in order to instantly switch the default handlers of selected file types to apps on your USB in any new environment. Coffee can be disabled at any time to revert back to the system’s default applications.
