Ever wanted an easy way to create playlists quickly without having to launch a media player? If so then M3U Dropper is for you.
M3U Dropper is a free, standalone portable app that can create audio playlists in M3U format via dragging and dropping music tracks onto the program’s interface. It offers a handful of features such as alphabetically sorting or randomizing the tracks list, selecting tracks by matching to a specific text string, dragging-and-dropping to re-order the tracks, etc. Continue reading ..
RasterVect Free Edition converts bitmap images to vector images in various formats. It offers a handy "wizard" conversion mode as well as conversions of multiple images in batch.
Vectorization is the process of transforming a pixel-based image to an image that is represented by a number of geometrical shapes (such as lines, circles, and curves). A vector image makes it possible to manipulate, enlarge, and modify the image quickly and easily in illustration and design software (such as Adobe Illustrator or the open source InkScape) while avoiding the pixellization and quality degradation that occurs with bitmap images. I was recently doing research for a post (Twelve Must Have Extensions for Google Chrome) and was surprised that there did not seem to be any simple “download any video from any video sharing site” extensions for Chrome, similar to DownThemAll or Download Helper for Firefox.
What I wanted was a plugin that can produce a download link (or links) for any video that is displayed on the page, without requiring the copying and pasting of URLs. It was somewhat surprising when I couldn’t find anything, as I simply wanted a “normal” streaming video downloader and wasn’t looking for anything that can download encrypted media (TubeMaster++ and StreamTransport are standalone apps that can do that). For some reason, such an extension for Chrome seems somewhat elusive at the moment.
My research lead me to Clipnabber.com, a video downloading service that supports many dozens of video sharing sites (including many that you’ve never heard of and all the ones that you have). Clipnabber provides a javascript bookmarklet that you can drag to the toolbar of any browser (including Chrome). Once you browse to the page containing the video you want to download, a single click on the bookmarklet will send you to the Clipnabber site and present you with a link (or links) that will download your desired video (see screenshots above). Ever wished you could keep a small representation of a program or window always visible on your desktop? OnTopReplica is a free app for Windows 7 and Vista that can create a resizable, always-on-top clone of any program or window on your desktop.
Aside from being a really neat concept, this program can have a wide variety of applications, most notably for watching internet video in a small, discreetly tucked away window while the browser window itself is covered by other programs that you are working with (see screenshot). If you’re tried out “virtual desktop” apps then you’re familiar with the functionality they provide, allowing you to organize your workspace by placing windows and programs on different virtual desktops and flipping across these desktops at will.
GiMESpace Free Edition takes a slightly different approach in that it allows you to drag your windows and programs horizontally across a single virtual desktop environment that extends infinitely over many screens, as if you had many monitors right next to each other. All you have to do is simply drag your windows and scroll them off the side of the screen, such that your windows and programs are placed side by side even as a part or all of them extend beyond the visible part of the screen, yet instantly accessible via a mouse-scrolling action.
GetFolderSize is a small, free program designed to reveal the disk size of folders and files on your hard drive(s) in a sorted list, to determine which folders, files or programs are taking up the most hard disk space.
It simply scans your selected hard drive or partition, displays both the folder list and the file list in two different panes, and allows the user to sort using any of the column heads in the display (such as size, number of files, or number of folders).
What I especially like about GetFolderSize is the availability of a portable version, which means that you can simply carry it around on a USB and use it in any environment that you need. Continue reading ..
This posting will describe the process of adding bookmarks to your PDF document using free software. Bookmarks are used in PDFs as an interactive index that can instantly transport the reader to certain pages, sections, individual elements within the documents, and even external documents or media files.
PDF bookmarks add an extra dimension to PDF documents by making them interactive in ways similar to, say, a webpage, whereby you can instantly jump to the desired section or information that you want to read. PDF’s with bookmarks can be much more useful and accessible, especially for technical document and instruction manuals, but also for ebooks whereby chapters or sections can be delineated as well.
The program used to do this and presented here is called “JPDFbookmarks“, and it is both free and open source. Continue reading ..
