Just as files and folders keep increasing on your computer and your desktop, so do the tools to organize them keep appearing, it seems.
Folder Bookmarks is yet another such a tool. And although it is somewhat early in its development, it still manages to be quite useful. As it’s name implies, Folder Bookmarks provides an interface where you can access favorite files, folders, as well as program shortcuts right on your desktop.
Four things to note about this program; (1) it lets you create categories to organize your files and folders into; (2) it provides a tabbed interface that (3) docks into the top of your screen and (4) allows for dragging and dropping to add files and folders. Continue reading ..

If you’ve upgraded to Windows 7 or Vista, you may have noticed that Windows explorer no longer supports a “folder up” button that can take you back up to the parent folder. Instead, Windows 7 and Vista only has a back button. To travel up the folder path, users have to use the breadcrumb navigation structure, which can be somewhat confusing and is not nearly as simple and straightforward as a simple “up” button.
This posting is going to describe a step by step process to add a simple “up” button to Windows explorer in Windows 7 or Vista using a free program called “ClassicShell”. As its name suggests, this software adds a number of functions inspired by the classic Windows XP shell, including a classic “start” menu. Here, however, I will describe how to install the “up” button only, and excluding any extra functions that the software can provide. Continue reading ..

In Windows XP, users were able to access folder options quickly, via the tools menu in any open folder. In Windows 7, however, there’s been a slight change, and at first glance it seems that the tools menu is simply not there anymore.
I recently needed to access and change my folder options, so I searched Google for "How to change folder options in Windows 7", and most of the top results pointed me to the of the Control Panel, where indeed you could access the folder options.
However, a much faster route to "folder options" is to simply press "Alt+T" from any open folder, whereupon the tools menu will appear and let you access "folder options" just as in XP. Click on the screenshot above to see the process illustrated. Continue reading ..

Listary provides a quick and easy way to search and filter items in Windows, whether its files and folders in Windows explorer or, say, entries in the task manager.
The program provides a convenient searchbox that can be summoned via hotkey in different locations, such as any open folder window in Windows explorer, the windows open/save dialog, the task manager, or even Windows 7 taskbar jumplists, etc. It provides find-as-you-type as well as autocomplete functionality.
A few additional functions are offered in the free version, such quick access to command line mode (via the searchbox) and, more interestingly, the option to edit text anywhere with your favorite text editor. Continue reading ..

TV Show Renamer is a free program that provides quick, intelligent renaming of TV series and movies/media downloaded from the internet and/or torrents.
The programs looks for naming conventions that are typically used in downloadable media, and will give the user a measure of control over what they want and do not want. For example, it will by default remove dots, dashes and underscore, introduce "proper" capitalization, remove year labels, and remove what it terms "extra crap" from the file names. However, if you are interested in, say, keeping underscores or any of the other elements all you have to do is uncheck them from the options.
If the "extra crap" function doesn’t rid your filenames from all unwanted elements in the filename, the program will let you add your own custom "junk words" to a list that it can then use in its operations. Continue reading ..

On Monday the cost for Amazon’s Kindle dropped from $259 down to $189 and Barnes & Noble’s Nook dropped to $199 while they introduced a wi-fi only version for only $149. For a quick comparison of the three devices, you might find the B&N comparison chart interesting though it is a bit biased in their favor. Despite dropping down a bit closer to the practical and affordable range, many people may not want a separate device for reading books but may still want to be able to read eBooks on their laptops, desktops, and other devices they already have. Fortunately, both Amazon and Barnes & Noble offer free-to-download applications that allow you to read their ebooks on your iPhone, iPad, PC, Mac, and Blackberry with more devices on their way supposedly.
You can download the Barnes and Noble eReader here (18.5 MB for PC).
You can download the Kindle eReader here (6.24 MB for PC).

Preme is an interesting free app that introduces a number of quirky enhancements to Windows 7, such as the ability to dock windows to the sides of the screen, the ability to launch the task switcher (or Aero flip 3D) via mousing over the top left corner, and the ability to close the active Window by double pressing the ’Esc’ key on the keyboard.
It also offers a handful of other tweaks that enable always on top/window minimize/window closing without via the mouse, touch-starting the lower left corner to launch the start menu, and automatically hovering over the close button when you right click a button on the taksbar.
Two things to consider; first, if you only like one or two of these features you’re able to activate only the ones you want, and second, that Preme takes up only 3 megs of memory, making it an all-around good deal! Continue reading ..
