Gimposition: print your PDF documents and ebooks 2 pages per sheet of paper, or in booklet or book format, etc.

Gimposition ScreenshotHave you ever wished you could print a PDF ebook or document in booklet form, to make it look more like an actual book or booklet? Or perhaps you wanted to print 2 pages per sheet to save paper, or maybe some other similar configuration.

This is exactly what Gimposition can do. This free software (which incidentally has nothing to do with popular freeware bitmap editor GIMP) can process a PDF document to create a new one that is either (a) booklet-formatted, (b) places 2-pages on each physical sheet of paper, (c) lays out two duplicate copies side by side, or lastly (d) so-called 2×1/2n layout. Duplicate Commander: a file deduping app that can automatically replace duplicate files with hard linked clones

Duplicate Commander Screenshot1Duplicate Commander identifies duplicate files that exist on your NTFS formatted hard disk, enabling you to easily manage or remove them to conserve space on your hard drive. It will check for files based on actual file data (i.e. files that are exactly the same irrespective of what they are named) or based on filename, filename and extension, filename and size, or filename and timestamp.

But what I like about Duplicate Commander is it’s ability to instantly create hard links to resolve file duplication problems, right from the program interface (for those unfamiliar with these, hard links allow a file – not a shortcut – to exist in multiple locations while occupying space on the hard drive only once; more on this here and here). Duplicate Commander also offers powerful filtering and search options, allowing users to include or exclude certain file extensions, to specify file size ranges to include and quickly check or uncheck items in the results based on rules.

This program is free for personal, educational, or professional use. Both portable and installer versions available. Continue reading ..

Roozz: create browser based web apps out of any desktop program

Rooz Illustration2

What if I told you that a technology exists that can take any Windows program and turn it into a fully-functional web app that looks and feels exactly like the original desktop version, without the need for the source code, and without the kind of re-programming or web development that aims to rebuild the app from the ground up?

The technology is called Roozz. It can take most programs and recast them as web apps in a matter of hours; the only requirement for the user to be able to use the browser-based apps is to install a browser plugin. Although this might seem like a disadvantage compared to other web app technologies, Roozz professes to have a significant edge in performance/speed as well as the fact that the conversion process itself is quick and does not require re-programming.

To see this in action, install the Roozz plugin first (found on this page), then check out their web based version of free image editing app PhotoScape, or take a look at the web version of freeware favorite IrfanView. If you’re a gamer, try their rendition of Serious Sam or Duke Nukem 3D (You will agree, I am certain, that the transformation is quite amazing). Continue reading ..

RoboReader: image viewer displays images and CBR/CBZ comics as on-screen floating objects

RoboReader Screenshot

RoboReader is a free image viewing program that handles images as floating objects on the desktop. But more than that, it is also a comics viewer for CBR or CBZ ebook formats (or other compressed image archives) , and supports dual page image view, which is well suited for viewing comics.

RoboReader is geared for fast-loading image display with minimal visible user interface and doesn’t offer much in the way of editing. It can display multiple images simultaneously as floating objects on the screen, and offers quick resizing (via mousewheel or keyboard shortcuts) and quick tweaking of on screen placement. Also, an excellent slideshow option that includes (optional) image filtering via filename or image tags.

Formats supported: CBZ, CBR, RAR, ZIP, 7z, animated GIF, JPG, JPEG, JPE, JFIF, BMP, PNG, TIFF, TIF, and ICO. Continue reading ..

Windows Double Explorer: simple dual pane tabbed file browser

WDE ScreenshotWindows Double Explorer (WDE) is a free, simple, 100% portable tabbed file browser for Windows 7that supports two horizontal or vertical panes.

Although WDE looks like many dual pane file browsers, it is noteworthy in that it provides both tabbed browsing in each pane (in the manner of web browsers) as well as portability (i.e. just unzip and run, no installation necessary). It is practical while keeping things very simple. Continue reading ..

URLHistory: monitors your clipboard for URLs and (optionally) stores them

URLHistory Screenshot2Do you frequently find yourself copying and pasting “disposable” URLs into text files or notes programs for later use? I know that I do, whether its one-off sites that I need to perform a specific task (and therefore do not want to bookmark or share), or download links from services like Rapidshare, etc.

If you’re in the same boat then you will probably like this program: URLHistory is a small, free program that runs in the background and monitors your clipboard for URLs. If found, URLHistory prompts the user for whether they would like to save the URL or not, and asks for an (optional) associated comment or label. Saved URLs can later be retrieved via the program’s icon in the system tray menu. Continue reading ..

Free Online OCR: web app delivers editable text from scanned images or PDFs

Free Online OCR screenshot2

Do you have PDF documents or images (e.g. JPG, PNG, TIFF) that were created using a scanner, and that you wish you could convert to editable text? Free Online OCR is a web service that can perform optical character recognition (OCR) on your scanned images and/or image based PDF documents, in order to generate a “normal” text that can be subsequently edited or used in other applications.

This free service works as follows: you upload your PDF files on the website, choose the output format (e.g. word or RTF), and then you can download the editable file once the processing is completed. Note that unlike most commercial desktop-based OCR engines, Free Online OCR does not provide any post-processing editing tools once the OCR process is complete.
