XBMC, renamed to its abbreviation from its XBox Media Center roots, has a niche use case but if it’s what you’re looking for, it performs impressively. XBMC provides an interface that is more intuitive and more polished that ties the media collection on your PC together in order to be everything you need in a home theater package.
XBMC is available for Mac OS X/OS X PPC, Linux, Windows, Apple TV, and as a Live CD or bootable jump drive. The installer for Windows is a mere 38 MB download.

I’ve been meaning to publish a follow up to my first “43 must have Windows Enhancements” posting forever, but it’s taken a long time simply because I wanted to stick with the completely arbitrary “43″ number of entries, and of course I wanted to only post apps that are worth writing about (as it turned out, I had many more than I needed).
The common theme here, as with the first one, is that these are all cool free Windows “enhancements”: i.e. apps that tweak or change the way we work with the system environment itself, whether it is working with files, folders, or applications; they are, to quote my first post “apps that brings functionality to the Windows environment that could or should have been built-in options in Windows”.
A caveat: I wouldn’t recommend that you install many of these on your system at the same time, so as not to overburden your PC, but also because some of these have overlapping functions.

If you want a quick way to launch frequently performed actions from the taskbar consider this: Jumplist Extender is a small free tool that can insert user-defined entries in the right-click program jumplists that appear in the Windows 7 taskbar (see screenshot above). It also lets you pin any folder or file within any program jumplist.
These new functions can be based on sending keyboard shortcuts into the application in question(such as in most programs CTRL+N creates a new document, CTRL+O opens a file, etc.); or, alternately, users can run command line executables from within the jumplist to perform various actions. The program also includes support for running Autohotkey scripts from within a jumplist, that can be created and edited within the Jumplist Extender interface itself. Continue reading ..

If you’d like to enjoy the unadulterated addictive fun of Angry Birds on your desktop for free (or if you simply like to destroy little green pigs), you now can. All you need to do is install Google’s Chrome browser, have (or get) a free Google or gmail account, then visit the Chrome App store, and … voila. Angry Birds for free. (Note: there is a standalone desktop version of Angry Birds for Windows, but it costs moola!).
As a former iPhone Angry Birds addict I can confirm that Angry Birds in Chrome, played using the mouse, is almost every bit as playable as the game on a touchscreen device. You can play in SD (standard definition) or in HD (hi definition, Ipad style). Continue reading ..

Resophnotes is a free note taking software that syncs with the “SimpleNote” cloud-based note taking service. This means that your notes from Reshopnotes can be accessed from multiple computers and devices (including the iPhone via this free app). Resophnotes can also be used portably from a USB drive.
This software is designed for simple, quick note-taking and is organized via a tagging system rather than a hierarchical (outline) structure. Continue reading ..

PDF2JPG is a small, free program that can quickly convert PDF’s to JPG or various other image formats (TIF, BMP, PNG, GIF).
There are many instances where you might want to convert PDF to JPG; e.g. to break up a scanned document or ebook into its constituent images in order to fix or enhance them, to ensure that a document cannot be easily converted back into editable format, or perhaps for easier publishing on the net or embedding within other documents, etc.
Although I’ve written about converting a PDF to Word and JPGs to PDFs, I recently needed to convert pages of a PDF document to JPG images. This free program is able to do this quickly, in batch, according to user-specified DPI resolution. Continue reading ..

Does Windows lack a feature which you wish it could have? Chances are this program offers it. 7Plus is a free, open source program that adds so many functions to Windows that it is hard to keep track of, ranging from interface tweaks and extensions to quick solutions for common tasks.
7Plus offers so many additions, in fact, that it can become difficult to know what it offers that you will absolutely love, versus the many other tweaks which can sometimes feel like clutter. Rest assured, however, that the program allows you to pick and choose, activating and deactivating features and functions (and keyboard shortcuts) at will. Continue reading ..
