Finally there’s a solid and reliable solution for converting and managing all your media files in one place. It’s called FreeStudio from DVDVideoSoft.
I first came across this program when I was trying to find a quick and easy way to convert my .avi files to watch them on my phone. I don’t have an Android (yet) so I can’t reap the benefits of the app store or anything like that, but most of the mid-range non-Android phones out today have capability to watch videos. Usually a good indicator is if the phone has a video camera feature, it probably allows you to play videos, and hence, movies. In the old days, this meant a lot of tiresome conversions to .3gpp and other obscure formats. That also meant a lot of hunting for a good freeware program to do the conversion, and subsequently a lot of frustration. Not anymore.

Blumind is a mind mapping application that anyone could fall in love with. For those unfamiliar with this type of software, the idea is to have a structured environment upon which you can toss all of your random thoughts on a subject then make sense of them later. What attracts me to Blumind is the hit-the-ground-running design and intuitive architecture. As a busy professional, I don’t have the time or patience to wade through overly complicated setup routines, vision blurring instructions or a labyrinth of menus and toolbars. This is especially true of mind mapping software. If your brain is standing at the bathroom door with its legs crossed trying to hold in a plethora of ideas, you want access to the facilities ASAP.

In the earliest days of Massive Multiplayer Online Games (MMOs), the biggest game I remember of the time was EverQuest. This game was one of the first few of a kind of game that would come to define it’s own genre. It was totally 3D, had options and depth not really seen before. As the MMO advanced, it would come to be dominated by games that had awesome graphic effects, millions of other players, and one major thing in common: Subscriptions. Everyone was used to games costing an initial investment but a game that charged you every month to play it? It seemed ludicrous to some, at the time, but it has come to be the norm in the MMO genre.
Lately that has begun to change. These days, there are MMOs and games like MMOs all over the internet that require nothing beyond an internet connection and browser to play them. Three of the most notable in my experience are Godville, Dead Frontier, and Battlestar Galactica. Each of them has it’s own claim to fame in the realm of MMOs and each of them is entirely free to download and free to play.

I didn’t expect to see it, but here it is: a freeware speech recognition software, and a good one at that.
DictationPro is a full-fledged speech-to-text software that can recognize words spoken through a microphone with a high degree of accuracy. It is ‘trainable’ such as to better recognize a particular person’s voice over continued usage. The program also features simple voice commands that can perform various formatting tasks as well, as deleting, copying of words and phrases. It also has the ability to store and recognize user defined ‘frequently used’ or technical words and phrases.
Works on Windows 7 and Vista, and you will need a good quality microphone to use this software effectively. Continue reading ..

Just got back from a 10 day vacation where the only access to the internet I had was via free WIFI in random cafés, on my iPhone. If you sent me an email or left a comment in the interim, I will do my best to respond soon.
One thing that seems clear is that I need more writers; so, if you would like to write for Freewaregenius drop me an email and tell me why you would be a spectacular writer. Or if you know someone who would be a good candidate tell them Freewaregenius is hiring.
I’ve also been toying with this idea, that does not seem to go away, of changing the name of my site. Continue reading ..

Now that your entire music collection, your audio books, and videos, (and even your family recordings from when you were eight) are on a hard drive, you might want to have a dependable, user-friendly tool to convert across different audio formats, as well as for performing various tasks such as merging audio files or extracting audio from video files.
