I recently downloaded some installers from download.com, only to find to my surprise that they have adopted a “web-installer” style “download manager” that offers to install random crapware before downloading the actual installer, such as the Bing or Babylon toolbars.
This sort of thing is not atypical, of course; we’re all quite accustomed to authors trying to cash in on the popularity of their free software, which we at Freewaregenius can completely understand, as long as it’s possible to opt out of this in the installation process. The difference in this case is that Download.com is circumventing software authors altogether, not asking permission before adding this (unnecessary) monetizing component, and certainly not sharing the revenue. One day, our grandchildren’s grandchildren will sit on their mommies’ and daddies’ knees and hear an almost unbelievable account of how people used to actually cut down trees to make paper. They will regard you and me with the same combination of sympathy and condescension that we have for outhouse owners, “Those poor, uneducated peasants.”
Luckily all that is swiftly changing. Paper based publications are struggling to stay alive in the face of electronic media. Gigantic printing presses will slowly grind to a stop and all of our reading materials will be available as multimedia files. I know this is not new information for our readers. I just love to revel in the imminence of the technological future. Continue reading ..

Do you listen to audiobooks on iTunes, iPhone or iPad? If so, check to see whether your audiobooks are in m4b format, and whether each audiobook is contained within a single file or spanned across multiple audio files. The reason for this is that an audiobook in a single M4B file can provide you with a number of extremely convenient features on iTunes and iOS devices: the ability to pause and resume later from the exact same spot, and the ability to set bookmarks and chapter markers within your audiobook.
Chapter and Verse is a convenient, free tool that can process audio files of all types into m4b audiobooks. It can re-encode multiple MP3s or other audio formats into a single M4B audiobook, and will let you create chapter markers and edit metadata. Users can also associate different images with different chapters that will be shown during playback on iTunes, and iOS devices. Continue reading ..

We all know that sinking feeling… the computer that used to spring to life in a few seconds seems to take forever grinding its way to a reasonable state of usability. No doubt you will have searched for an answer and found the usual tips about uninstalling unnecessary programs, especially those that start automatically.
What you will not have found are the following two tips that that I have found to be helpful and have a significant effect on bootup time. They apply to all versions of Windows from XP to 7: deleting the icon cache files, and deleting the Prefetch folder.

Do you like a challenge? Do you enjoy being frustrated and amused at the same time? Can you perform complex keyboard interactions without thinking about them? If you answered yes, then QWOP and GIRP might be for you.
Made in 2008, and one of the simplest games ever created, QWOP and it’s counterpart, GIRP, are two of the most challenging, rewarding, and silly games ever created. Both are free to play, have been around a long time, and are still popular! They are browser based flash games created by Dr. Bennet Foddy. (There is also now an iPod version but it costs two dollars, so doesn’t count as freeware) In this article we will be concentrating on the free versions available at www.foddy.net Continue reading ..

Do you enjoy looking at 360° panoramic photography? If so, then check out TourWrist, a web site that offers geo-tagged panoramic images for your perusal, similar to previously mentioned Panoye. Unlike Panoye, however, TourWrist also offers a free iPhone app that makes consuming/viewing panoramas easy and spontaneous, by putting in the palm of your hand (and your pocket), and offering an interactive “immersive” view from every conceivable angle.
But TourWrist seems to be difference from the usual community upload/sharing services (e.g. Panoye) in a number of other respects, most notably the fact that it’s panoramas (called ‘tours’) seem to be much more polished and professionally produced than most of what you would typically found on the web. Moreover, while the topics covered include many ‘cultural’ and artistic images, which is what I expected to see, the majority of images (19,000 out of approx. 24,000) seem to be of a commercial nature (restaurants, resorts, hotels shopping, and the like).
