Moby Gratis: find free music for your independent, student, or non-profit film, courtesy of Moby

MobyheadMoby Gratis is an archive of instrumental music clips created by the alternative rock/electronic music maestro Moby. These are available to anyone to download and legally use in their film projects, provided that these are independent, student, non-commercial, or non-profit films.

One day I will make a film, and it will be fantastic (you’ll see!). When that day comes and I am faced with the issue of finding music to use for my scenes I will go to Mobygratis and check out the growing collection of instrumental/electronic/soundtrack music that might fit the mood. If you are working on your own project you should check it out.

You will have to create an account first, afterwhich you can log in and check out multiple pages of links to music. All of the music is instrumental; you will not find tracks from his albums (or at least I didn’t see any). You can preview the clips on the page through a flash player, and request a license on-the-spot if you want to use it. How cool is that?

See video below of Moby talking about Moby Gratis:

[Thanks Simon for telling me about this]

    Nice picture samer!

  • Thanks, but no thanks

I hate it when they force to register to without giving out any details about the inside content. I’m not going to give out my full information, including phone number and valid e-mail address, to some shmoes who can’t even provide a small sample of the content somewhere around the registration page. The next thing you know, you have a whole bunch of Nigerian relatives asking for a donation that will help to enlarge you you-know-what. That leads me to a question, is this site child-friendly? :)

To the commenter above me, that’s where the two most useful sites I’ve ever found on the internet come into play
    For the e-mail:
    http://www.10minutemail.com/

    and for everything else:
    http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/

To thanks: this is not the kind of site that will send you spam; this is a pop star that’s providing free music scores for independent films (watch the video). There’s a room for, um … skepticism/being extra careful on the internet, but here it is misplaced.

To Samer: Skepticism and being extra careful on the internet is never misplaced.

Samer, I was mostly joking. My main criticism is the ‘blind’ registration. That is, I’m forced to register even though I know nothing about and may not even like the inside content at all. I find Moby’s commercial music hit-and-miss so I can only speculate of the quality and usefulness of those free tracks.

Anyway, I’m mostly writing to thank the provider of the http://www.10minutemail.com link. It’s much better alternative to managing a bunch of secondary Yahoo accounts, which, by the way, those get absolutely flooded with spam even after registering on quite legit websites. I’ll register on Moby Gratis now and see if I can use any of the tracks in a non-commercial videogame I’m developing. I’ll also have to find out if the license applies to non-profit videogames as it does to non-profit movies. If it’s the case, I’ll ask Moby or his people to point it out in the general license.

This is just a marketing ploy. You give Moby all your personal information and then he turns down your request for music (but he keeps all your info). I just wanted to make a cute video with my kids and he turned me down flat. What kind of monster is he?

  • Bedfords

I requested a license to use a couple of tracks for a personal, family, home video with no possible commercial value. I never received a response. Everytime I check the Mobygratis website, it just shows “pending”. No email address is provided to contact for more information. It has been almost two weeks.

  • Raj

Bedfords, same here. Not been as long but it’s been long enough (past 5 days they quote) to start to be ‘concerned’ about whether MobyGratis is on a permanent holiday. Did you ever get a reply or no?

  • Bolchy

I requested 5 songs from mobygratis and after about 2-3 weeks of waiting I got 5 emails back saying my requests had been approved. And that was a week ago. I did notice though that the “5 day reply” thing has been removed from the site…

Mind you I’m not exactly working on a “cute” home video, I’m doing a 15 minute short film for my final project, so my synopsis was pretty detailed.

My only logical answer is that perhaps Moby (more likely site administrators) want to support independent short films rather than home videos?

I totally agree with Bolchy. I think Moby is very generous in giving for free original music for our projects (but with the condition of creating something different, original, experimental, and of course non-commercial).

  • Nusreen

While I think its cool he’s giving this out to use, I think he’s being annoying about retaining so much control. Either give it away, or don’t. Filling out a giant form, waiting for a response, etc. is a waste of time. The non-commercial clause is also ambiguous, why not just define what it would be up front? The world needs musicians to be a lot cooler about truly freely giving away some of their music so the barrier to making quick videos can be reduced.

I like Moby. He’s a bit like me: bald, four eyes and highly talented :)
