JPEG to PDF: convert JPGs to PDFs quickly and easily

JPEG to PDF is a free program that can convert JPG images into a PDF file (or multiple PDF files) quickly and easily.

It is a small, portable program that does not require installation.

How do you convert JPG images into PDF? Typically I would recommend using a virtual PDF printer, which not only can convert images to PDF but any other (printable) file type as well. (For a comparison of the best free virtual PDF printers, see this post).

However, if you just want a quick and easy way to only convert JPG images to PDF, do not particularly care to install a virtual printer, and/or would like to be able to launch this functionality portably from a flash drive (or all of the above), then you should check this out this software.

Here are more notes:

  • Performance: very fast. Processed 147 JPEG’s (36 megs) into a single PDF file in 5 seconds.
  • Output settings: you can specify page size and margins, shrink oversized images, or match image size+margins of the original. Very convenient.
  • Formats: “supports the original JPEG/JFIF format, as well as JPEG2000 (.J2K and .JP2) files” – to quote the program website.
  • Drag and drop: select the JPG files in Windows Explorer and drag them to the program interface.
  • Sorting the images/pages: the best way to make sure that the image files are properly ordered/sorted is to sort them Windows explorer (in the original window), as sorting a very large number of files in in JPEG to PDF isn’t very convenient. To move an image file up or down in the list, right click and select “move up” or “move down”. Use Shift+click and CTRL+click to select multiple images within the interface.

Wish list

  • Better sorting options: specifically “move to top” and “move to bottom”. Auto sort ascending/descending would also be nice, as would sorting by buttons on the interface rather than the context menu.

The verdict: a great little portable tool, especially if you do not want or are unable to install a virtual PDF printer. I saw a similar freeware app a few months ago that I was testing for a possible review, except I noticed it worked fine for a handful of images but broke down when I loaded about 150. No such problems with JPEG to PDF; it processed the very same group of images quickly and smoothly (plus it has some nice output settings options as well).

Compatibility: WinAll.

Go to the program page to download the latest version (approx 40K).

Why would you do that? Are your Jpeg files not occupying enough hard drive space? Ah, I see, it’s for making thumbnail sheets or some such. There’s no earthly reason to do it for a *single* Jpeg.

    • Samer

@Old Man Dotes: its not at all for making thumbnail sheets.
Its for compiling a bunch of Jpeg’s into an ebook.
E.g: you go to a conference and take numerous notes. Once in the office you scan them, then compile them into a PDF.

Actually, very useful when converting CBZ/CBR comics into PDF ebooks. Here’s a posting I wrote in 2006
      http://www.freewaregenius.com/how-to-convert-cbz-cbr-files-to-pdf/

This site helped me to know jpeg to pdf conversion in detail.

  • Clean-keeper

    1) I captured a scrolling screen into a JPG. As it was a long article with graphics, this seemed the best way to go.

    2) Tried this jpeg-to-pdf software, but it only made an empty (i.e. blank) pdf file that still managed to be the same size (about 6mb) as the original jpg file. I tried several times and every single time it produced a blank page far bigger than a genuinely blank pdf file should be. Ergo, this software is useless to me.

    3) I have PrimoPDF and I can’t figure out how to “pdf-print” more than one screenful of the jpg. I’ve tried via several different programs, no luck. I always get one page of it. Ergo, PrimoPDF is useless to me. Not to mention it slows down the computer.

    4) Tried an online converter, but it messed up some parts of the text. Still, it was the only method that actually produced the article in full. So well done whoever runs that page, but ultimately it was useless also.

    5) In the same time I spent doing all of this, I probably could have grabbed the text and the pictures and graphs and turned it all into a readable file manually. Of course, I have no intention of doing that, so I’ll just forgetaboutit instead.

Must be hard to convert one lousy jpg file into a pdf document of several pages. I mean, the program would actually have to a) split the jpg into screenfuls of jpg files, and b) then convert those jpgs into a pdf file. Very hard to do apparently. Either that or it can be done by PrimoPDF, but in a way I just can’t figure out, and considering I tried pretty much every option offered, it means it is a useless non-option to any ordinary user who wants to convert a big jpg file into a PDF file of several pages.

That’s probably why the REAL programs cost money. Not that I’d ever give Adobe any money or buy some other program that shouldn’t be but a simple exercise for a programmer.

Thanks for the review, by the way. I tried the software. Didn’t work.

Program throws a runtime exception for me whenever I try to create my PDF file. Did anyone else come across this problem and know how to fix it?

  • http://www.compulsivecode.com Jesse

If you encounter a problem with the program, post it to the author’s feedback page. Be prepared to provide an image file that can cause the problem you are experiencing.

Also, make sure you have the latest version. The latest version supports most image formats.

    Fantastic!
It’s so fast it worked almost instantly on a set of 97 jpeg’s.
And I love that you don’t have to install it.
One minor thing is that when you highlight a set of jpeg’s to drag and drop into it, it puts it in order starting with the individual jpeg your mouse is on when you drag them over.
So just drag them from the first jpeg.
    Problem solved.

    :-)

This is amazing. So simple, so small, yet unbelievably powerful. I downloaded 7 other programs, none of which was working like it should, or was over sized, complicated and costs money until i found this one. I’m using Win 7 ultimate 32bit edition and it works like a charm. THANK YOU! babamulon.mondozoo.com

    VIRUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Samer

@ Arron: this program does not contain a virus; in fact, it has the cleanest Virustotal profile I have ever seen:
    http://www.virustotal.com/file-scan/report.html?id=1644b97d10c99b8cf93a642595584f25036a37a9b5b1afc671e2c0c802a67629-1301428749

Just FYI: virus total performs a scan across 43 different antivirus and anti malware engines, including the best rated ones. Which makes me wonder where on earth you got a report that it was a virus.

It’s as clean as can be.

Is the PDF ebook is suitable for printing?
I just finished a magazine of 44 pages. Pages are in JPEG format 300DPI (suitable for printing). I would like to send my project to a printer but they asked for PDF file of 44 pages. I am afraid this program will generate a crapy quality pdf file.

Your converter worked fine on one computer, but the second one kept giving me a Printer Installation error message, even after removing both connected printers. Tried different combinations at least 8 times and no luck. Since both computers are same model Dell 530 What might be wrong?

Just a quick question, Do you need to have Adobe Acrobrat in order to create pdf’s, or can you do it with just the adobe reader. I know this service described above does it, but I already have adobe reader, and if it does it then i could just use that. Thanks

I tried it. JPEGtoPDF worked excellent!!

  • http://www.myblog.web.id Yani Sidi

I’ve tried it, and I really like this software. I have a hope for this great software. What if this software, added a feature that can perform image compression. (so we can reduce the file size)

I have tried several times , do the conversion with the same source and have a size of 100mb (100 images). I did a conversion of A4 and A5, and the image quality of the conversion result is very good. And the results of all these conversions have a file size did not differ (still 100mb). so I thought, this program requires an add on that can be used to perform image compression.

Anyway, for people who always scan his document and need to convert into e-book, a photographer that want to make his photo as a journal, I think this is an excellent software and useful. You should try it!

Thank you and sorry with my English :)
