GOM Player

GOM Player is a freeware player for DVDs and Video Files that offers advanced features and a really slick look-and-feel. Most importantly, it comes with its own resident codecs, meaning that you WILL be able to play pretty much every format without needing to find, download, and install different codecs for different formats. It also purports to have patented technology that allows you to play partially downloaded files! I haven’t tried this, but it sounds good to me.

  1. Thanks Mr. Freeware Genius. Love the site. Finding good (and free to boot) software is a blessing. Thanks for doing the leg work up front for us lazy folk who want a one stop shop :)

I was looking at these media players and i noticed you didn’t have Songbird. It’s a pretty nice freeware app. built with the intention of becoming the firefox of media players. its very very sweet and some members of the team that made winamp are helping to develop it. Here is the link hope you enjoy it as much as I do. http://www.songbirdnest.com/

  3. good

  4. Hey thanks. I downloaded this because i found it on your site. You say you haven’t tried it so i thought i’d let you know that i have and really apreciate it. It works well, has a full set of options and codecs. Only let down is that you have to download dvd codecs to watch dvd disks or .iso files. but that only takes a minute then you’re up and running.

this seemed to want to work but locked up my PC. Also, it somehow managed to make my internet stop working. It may have been up to something sneaky and locked up my firewall. A reboot fixed the internet problem. I then uninstalled it.

  13. Still prefer VLC as GOM can’t natively open and play the contents of an ISO file.

  14. GOM isn’t that great because it has trouble with many common formats unless you have specific software installed.

I found that The KMPlayer is a much better free Windows media player. http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/index.php

  1. [...] AutoGK will allow you to choose whatever content on the DVD that you would like to compress, including special features. You WILL need to know which VOB files to select for compression, given that most CD’s contain menus, previews, and other material besides the main feature. This is easy enough though, as the main feature almost always is the biggest set of VOB files in terms of size. You can also play VOB files on most DVD software, including GOM player, to see which VOB files are which. [...]
