Excellent list, great work, thank you !

I’d add two other great open-source applications I used before I switch to Linux :
    Winroll : http://www.palma.com.au/winroll/
(roll windows in their title bar, minimize to tray, change transparency, always on top, to bottom… and very low memory consumption)
    Taekwindow http://taekwindow.sourceforge.net/
(move and resize windows with a single click and the alt key, focus under the mouse cursor, low memory footprint too)

Nice list, but the Queen is missing from it:

    Windows PowerPro
    http://powerpro.webeddie.com/

PowerPro lets you take control of how you use Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP. Run commands and configure your system any way you want.

PowerPro gives you a compact and powerful launch bar, menu, and tray icon facility. But this is just the start. With a little experimenting with its configuration, you’ll find that you can use PowerPro to change the way you work with your system. The source of its power is the way PowerPro integrates three capabilities:

    * Running commands: Tool bars, tray icons, hot keys, mouse actions, menus, timer, scheduler.
    * Controlling other program’s windows: Close, minimize, maximize, roll-up to caption, tray minimize, position.
    * Providing utility functions: Send keystrokes to programs, run commands when windows first open, virtual desktops, clipboard extender, keyboard macros, shutdown, show all folder files in a menu, sounds, wallpaper, and screensaver activation and randomization.

And you know – it really does it all and something more:
    - shows clock (+ date and day of week) on its bar, allowing to remove it from tray,
    - shows free RAM (and can other show informers)
    - can make windows transparent and topmost
    - enlarges open/save dialogs
    - have built-in script language, allowing you to write scenarios (start some programs one at a time with programmed delays, for example)

And the configurator is put in separate .exe file, what means that the engine itself uses a modest amount of memory.

One of things I like most about it – it allows to sent keystroke on mouse “chord”, left and then right click simultaneously. So when I want player to play next track – I even do not have to raise my hand to keyboard multimedia keys, I can do it by simple mouse clicks.

  • T

Am I missing something? I’ve tried everything and wasn’t as impressed with it as much as I am Locate, and Launchy wasn’t as good as Executor IMHO if you have used both pleas tell what I’m missing. I agree with the rest and great list.

    • Samer

@T: “Everything” uses a very novel way to index your files; it doesn’t “scan” your drive the way Locate32 does, but refers to changes to the Master File Table of the NTFS volume in order to build its database. This means that it uses less resources and that you can trust it to always be up to date.

@Roman: I considered PowerPro for a review on Freewaregenius many times. Except the program is so complex it always gave me a headache.

In fact, I purposely avoided many “complicated” Windows Enhancement programs for this post, including the following:

      ShellEnhancer:
      http://www.freewaregenius.com/shellenhancer/

      Pitaschio
      http://www.freewaregenius.com/pitaschio/

DM2 (this was a tough decision, as I really like this one)
      http://www.freewaregenius.com/dm2/

  • David

“Everything” is a cracker. I ditched Google DeskTop search in preference to this program. You can also do most of the usual manipulations (delete, re-name, drag, move, etc.) from within the program. Makes Windows’ Explorer look positively pedestrian. It can also show system files and what I find especially useful is the way it shows all my back-ups on the three external drives and I can see instantly whether I have any music tracks duplicated and deal with them from within the program. Files can be opened as well. Right click for menu or left double-click. As a matter of interest, it was due to “Everything” that I discovered a WE 640 gig external drive I had bought was pre-formatted to FAT (not sure why – MAC use, maybe?), as the program wasn’t indexing that drive. Did a conversion to NTFS and everything normal.
I also use AudioShell. Very useful.

    2 Samer

I considered PowerPro for a review on Freewaregenius many times. Except the program is so complex it always gave me a headache.

The real man must not fear complex things. :) I doubt that it is much more complex than smartphone, digital camera or car – and people write articles-reviews about phones, cameras and cars.

Yes, PowerPro is not that simple – but it does many things and make my life much more comfortable.

I wonder why people struggle with many little apps if PowerPro does most of that – clocks, informers, timers, launchbar (+ scripts useful for startup too), scheduler, tray minimize, force system reboot, hotkeys, mouse actions, advanced windows functions?

And finally, what is simpler – run and maintain one program for 12 tasks or maintain one program for every single task – 12 programs?

  • Willie

    Any recommendations for clipboard managers?

  • Transcontinental

Great review, quite a sum of information, and work. Thanks.
I use already a few of these apps, and I discover others. I agree with above comments, ‘Everything” remains my greatest source of enthusiasm, but some other apps have become as well an everyday companion, such as ‘Sizer’, ‘Taskbar Shuffle’, ‘AudioShell”, ‘XNView Shell Extension’. Concerning ‘TeraCopy’, I prefer as alternative another freeware app called ‘FastCopy’.
Resumed, this page is a fantastic reference! Vice job.

  • sb

Great List. Than you for sharing!

  • george

interesting list, but i must say, you can accomplish about 80% of these things by running Directory Opus under Windows 7, with more control over when and how it all happens.

  • tombones

As an alternative to Taskbar Shuffle, I would strongly recommend Taskix: http://taskix.robustit.com/

It performs the same basic function (allowing you to reorder taskbar tabs) with some added features, like the ability to mousewheel scroll on the taskbar to switch windows. Taskix also has more reliable middle-click-to-close functionality (Taskbar Shuffle’s doesn’t work for certain programs, for some reason)

Most importantly, Taskix DOESN’T suffer from TS’s crippling fault: if you try to middle-click-close windows on the taskbar too quickly, Taskbar Shuffle will inexplicably initiate a Windows shutdown sequence that can’t be aborted. To my knowledge this still hasn’t been fixed in TS, and it has caused me enough headaches that I couldn’t recommend installing the program in its current form.

The only feature from TS that Taskix is missing is the ability to reorder icons in the system tray, something I hope the developer will add in a future version.

Thank you for the very handy list, and for keeping up such an informative and useful site :)

I second the comment about the omission of PowerPro! To be specific, this ONE single utility (with a typical memory footprint of less than 2-3 Mb) can replace ALL of the following programs from the list:

    3- Filebox Extender
    4- Desktop Media
    5- Sizer
    6- Folder Menu
    8- WinSplit Revolution
    10- Taskbar shuffle
    12- TaskSwitchXP
    13- Link Shell Extension
    14- Launchy
    15- Freesnap
    17- 3RVX
    18- OSD Mute
    19- Dexpot
    22- Stick
    31- Send To Toys
    32- RBTray
    33- Trayconizer
    34- Flashfolder
    35- Folder Guide
    36- Shock Bookmark
    37- Open Target Shell Extension
    38- MenuApp

So, if you get PowerPro, you could make this a list of “Twenty-two of the Best…” Well, actually, PowerPro could replace some of the others as well; it would just take a little more work. ;-)

  • http://potatomouseproductions.com/ Mike

Pistachio is still my favorite Windows enhancements. In fact, it can do some of the things in here, and more. On the fly transparency, right-click Minimize to minimize to system tray, key disabling (Good-bye, Caps Lock!), window-snapping, a huge amount of mouse shortucts for the Taskbar, Title Bar, and Desktop with many different options, and much more.

Also, I prefer Taskix to Taskbar Shuffle to move my taskbar tabs. Taskix allows scrolling between windows with the mouse wheel; a nice addition.

    Great compilation overall!

@BenWah: I offer no guarantees with respect to my ability to respond to all comments (esp. as I am currently on vacation with intermittent internet access).
All of these apps were tested with XP; some are XP specific, and are noted as such. I am using many of them on my wife’s Vista laptop (such as “Everything” and Launchy). If I had to guess, I would say all of them work just fine with Vista. You can check the developer’s home pages for more info.

      I hope this helps.

Some notes. I like Filebox Extender like you, but I think it should also include Direct Folders as another option which is from the same author as TeraCopy. It works much the same way and is free for home use like TeraCopy. However I find I like it better in most instances.

  • Samer

@Leland: something about the limitations of Direct Folders’ free version compared to the paid version gets on my nerves, which is why I never reviewed it on Freewaregenius (despite considering doing so many times). If you installed filebox extender, then you dont need flashfolder, the push pin functionality is very useful when you can put a playing movie window on top of other apps while doing other work. I havent tried teracopy, but you can also use JesCopy or Microsoft’s own RichCopy. search for “richcopy bulk file copy tool” and the excellent freeware DMEX is missing from the list. It is a windows explorer enhancement that adds multiple file rename, copy file path to clipboard, etc. to the context menu.

Because -once Fences expires- you can download the final build also for FREE ! (Actually, it recently did expire. All new downloads of Fences ~are~ to ‘final build’. )

They’ll have a pay version, but as with many of Stardock’s applets, a basic free version concurrently.

BTW, the free Fences version is terrific and ~deserves~ #1 placement on this list ! I’m looking forward to the pay version when it comes out. But nobody will be disappointed by the free version.

    Guys,

Microsoft is much smart people since they are the pioneer of the computer age.
They made an incredible innovation of computer graphics so that even an illiterate fellow can operate the computer. People who did not know how to write their name in English, were not able talk in any other language other then their state language , are now working on computer and earning their daily bread and butter, in gulf countries especially.

Please do not teach ‘ Microsoft ‘ what to do or what not to.

Be careful of such rubbish extra softwares which will surely spoil , corrupt or can cause permanently damage your operating system

Vendors of such FREE Software can create worms or viruses in the computer and do ” BLUE THEFT ” of your system and hack your confidential personal information data.

    Regards

  • xXLGXx

    Chikoobaby>
Are you familiar with open source software? Some of the items on the list are infact open source, which means ANYBODY can go in and read the code. That also means there is no chance for malicious code to be entered.

Sure Microsoft developed a platform that is dynamic, but adding to that platform is key.
Enhancing a system is a tricky thing. Yes, you have to be careful as in what you install, since there are malware out there that is only out to destroy and corrupt, but this is where research and a testing platform, (some people just use a simple virtual environment, sandbox if you may), to test out new software.

With enough precautions and research, you are safe.
Free software today is as good, if not even better in some cases, than paid software.
You just need to weed out the junk.

@On topic: Excellent list. There were a couple of items that I found useful. Only drawback that I could see was that just a handful offered a “portable” version.
