RichFLV is a free Adobe Air tool that performs a number of operations on FLV video files, including merging files, extracting sections from larger FLVs, exporting audio as FLV or MP3, converting to SWF, extracting individual frames to image files, and defining cue-points and metadata. Operations can be performed on the whole video or user-defined sub-sections.

If you’ve been looking for a tool that can work with FLV video (merge, cut, demux, edit) this may be the one you were waiting for. What is interesting about this tool, aside from being FLV-specific is that it can handle (read/write) FLV without the need to install any external codec packs on your system.

Here are some notes on what this Adobe Air application can do:

Merge FLV: do this by first opening a file then from the import menu select FLV (stitch) and select the next FLV in line. Save the combined file and repeat for any subsequent files (note: use a new filename everytime; do not save over a file you are merging). Unfortunately it does not seem possible to simply select multiple files simultaneously in one fell swoop.

Cutting sections from an FLV’s: this is extremely simple; all you have to do is define the inpoint and outpoints (by dragging and dropping these visually or from the keyframes section), and saving it from the "export" menu.

Export to audio or SWF: once you set the inpoint and outpoint, this can be perfomed from the export menu. Your audio file can be either in FLV format or MP3.

Cue points: you can define "cue points" on your video, and add informational "parameters" to these. These can be saved within the video itself or exported to XML files. Having said that, I am unsure as to what the usefulness of this is in practice (somebody please advise).

Performance: excellent. Saving and exporting is ultra fast.

Metadata: you can define your own labels and values and store them in the video. Again, not sure why you would do that, as standalone players other than RichFLV do not seem to read or display the metadata.

Memory consumption: is completely out of whack in that it consumes way too much, depending on the size of the FLV file you are working with (e.g. was using 120 megs when editing a 6a0 meg video). This is due to this software being beta and the developer is aware of this and working on it. Let’s hope it improves with subsequent versions; in the meanwhile if you do not use RichFLV as your main FLV player and only launch it when you need it you should be OK.

Interface: warrants a mention. Very good looking, provides a nice user experience. The information and control panels can be minimized at will. Only criticism: no drag and drop support.

Keyframes section: seems to be there entirely for navigational purposes.

Wish list (or how this program can be even better)

Merging multiple FLVs at once: honestly with a program like this it should be possible to specify a number of FLVs, sort and/or organize them, and merge them all without having to go through the dance described in the "Merge FLV" section above.

Splitting an FLV: somewhat baffled that it is not possible to use the cue points I set to split the FLV. This program needs the addition of rules-based splitting (e.g. every 10 mins, x number of equal parts, etc.) as well as the option to use user defined cue point for splitting.

The verdict: overall a nice tool especially given the dearth of free tools that edit/manipulate FLVs. If you need to merge FLVs occasionally, extract video segments, audio or image stills from them or convert them to SWF this is probably the tool you are looking for. Otherwise check out the following tools: FLV Extract, Flash This!, Avidemux, Movica (these last two being generic video editors that can handle FLVs if you have appropriate filters/codecs installed on your system). My favorite video converter SUPER can also split FLVs – see this thread.

Also bear in mind that this is beta software and that as the author takes it to the next level it will continue to improve (keeping my fingers crossed that he will take my wish list items above into consideration).

It can process a number of PNG images serially into a SWF file or otherwise batch-create SWF files out of individual PNGs.

If you need to convert PNG images to flash animations or if you need a simple, quick way to create flash SWF animations or banners this program can be extremely useful. Here are some notes on this program:

Input: can use PNG images as input, preserving their transparency. You can use a single image or multiple images that will be displayed in succession within the resulting SWF.

Transparency: the transparency in the original PNG (if any) is preserved in the SWF.

Quality: reducing the quality factor can significantly reduce file size; this operates in a similar manner to what you would expect from JPG compression.

Delay: when using multiple images in succession it is possible to set delay between them either through the delay field in the program dialog (in seconds) or the FPS field (frame per seconds). The program seems to respond to whichever value you entered in the two boxes that is the largest. Also note that it seems to readily accept fractions of a second if that is what you want.

Batch operations: it is possible to create a SWF from each PNG in the list rather than a single animated SWF.

Control SWF: the program allows you to load what it terms a "control" SWF; I couldn’t find info on what this is on the site, but it seems to be a way of appending a PNG to an already existing SWF.

Console version: note that you can download a console version that provides the ability to perform PNG to SWF conversions through the command line Syntax is: png2swf_console input*.png output.swf [delay] [quality] [control].

Downloading: you will need to register on the site to get access to the download links, which involves providing a valid email address (or at least one where you could receive and confirm an email).

The verdict: this program provides a great way to convert PNG images to SWF (and, by extension, convert to flash SWF any image files that once you convert these to PNG). If you work with flash it can be potentially extremely useful in many different ways.

Version Tested: 1.2

Compatibility: WinAll.

Go to the Png2Swf page to download the latest version (approx 1.22 megs).

This program is a frontend to FFMpeg, the transcoding engine behind the majority of freeware video conversion programs. Here are some notes on this one:

No decisions to make: except whether you want to convert to FLV or SWF. No resizing, changing aspect ratio or bitrate, etc. This is part of why I like this program. The resulting video will have the same resolution, aspect ratio, bitrate … etc, as the original. For a more ’transformative’ FLV conversion use Super, Internet Video Converter, etc.

Super fast: probably because it is not re-encoding individual video and audio tracks but simply creating a new container.

Supports SWF: which is simply fantastic, and another reason why I decided to feature this program on Freewaregenius.

Memory use: a nice compact 8 megs.

Wish list

The ability to go the opposite way (FLV to AVI). I know you can do this with any number of freeware conversion programs (which I mentioned above), but it would be nice to have this functionality here as well using the same simple interface, without giving the user a battery of decisions to make.

Portability. It would seem that a portable version would be very easy to implement.

The verdict: a very nice free tool to keep in your collection, especially if you just want a simple 1:1 format conversion and re-encoding. You will especially like this tool if you do SWF conversions as well as FLVs.

Version Tested: 3.0

Compatibility: Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP & Vista (not tested on Vista 64-bit)

Download Flash This v3.0 here (8 megs). Program seems to have been removed from the developer’s page.

F-ab is a player for online videos and other flash animations where, instead of a URL, you literally ’tune into’ channels that are broadcast over the internet in the manner of a radio dial. It offers more than 1200 such channels as of this writing, with the possibility of adding your own (including YouTube channels) to the mix. F-ab also has a flash-based videoconferencing component.

This program, as you might have surmised from the text above, is somewhat hard to describe. I knew instantly that I wanted to post it on Freewaregenius if only because of being so interesting, although for all intents and purposes it is hard to see why a user might be inclined to be browsing channels on F-ab rather than on a video sharing site or any of the free video/TV broadcasting programs that have proliferated recently. There are a number of ways in which this program is unique; here are some notes on this program:

What it is: F-ab downloads and delivers specific content in the manner of a video sharing service. It is not a player for SWF or FLV player.

Interactivity: Has an interactive dimension beyond the experience provided by video sharing, as it not only broadcasts flash video (FLV) but flash animations (SWF’s) as well .

The content: there are 4 categories: advertisement, art, science, and sport. I wasn’t really able to see any single thread that connects the different channels on offer, except perhaps that the animations tend to be artsy and “hip”. A lot of the flash advertising animations seem to be there because they are interestingly made rather than as ads.

Changing the channel: you can do this by moving a dial. F-ab can support up to 10,000 channels (from 0000 to 9999 on the dial); it currently is up to the 1200 or so channels. It doesn’t really work very well when most channels do not have content. The best way to browse F-ab is to go to the public “search” section and browse the categories/channels there, which are displayed in a list.

Publishing a channel: you can publish your own channels on F-ab. Publishing a YouTube channel is extremely easy and literally involves a simple dragging and dropping of your channel’s URL/Favicon onto the F-ab interface.

Videoconferencing: F-ab supports flash-based videoconferencing where instead of a telephone number, an email is used for the person to be called. This is disabled by default and you have to go to the preferences to enable it. Note that I did not try the videoconferencing functionality for this review.

Options: browse by category, bookmark a favorite channel, scale proportions (or view fullscreen), jump back to previously viewed channels,

Source: click the “source” button to open the source web page where your flash movie originated, in case you are interested in finding out more about it.

Quirks: might not play some videos correctly because it does not support Javascript, search does not work very well because content is not yet categorized, and, the F-ab site states, for some reason the application will not work if installed in the “program files” folder in vista (but will work if installed in the root directory).

The verdict: this is a rather interesting program, but might be more of a novelty item than a tool you would come back to over and over. The content provided has a definite coolness factor, which complement the sleek design of the user interface. It would be interesting to see how this program develops and whether it is able to find a niche for itself.

Having said this, it might be worth downloading this simply to browse the animations, if you are into this sort of thing.

Version Tested: 2.4.0

Compatibility: Windows XP, Vista. Mac OS 10.4.5 or higher. Java runtime environment required.

Version tested: 1.0.23.707

AuthorPOINT Lite is a freeware program that can convert Powerpoint presentations into flash. It offers a number of interesting features such as the ability to define quality output settings, a handful of output templates to choose from, and the option to upload your presentations for online viewing using a platform which the developers call “authorSTREAM”.

If you have been looking for a simple way to convert Powerpoint presentations to flash then you’ve found it. AuthorPOINT Lite is a program that does this in a straightforward and efficient manner (don’t let the “lite” in the title put you off; I like this program enough to give it a “pick” rating). Here are some notes on this program:

The user interface: is simple and functional. Converted presentations are shown as thumbnails in the left hand panel, and clicking on any of these will display the individual slides as thumbnails in the bottom panel. Its rather nice.

The conversion process: authorPOINT Lite imports your presentation one slide at a time, and conversion is relatively quick. A 30-slide presentation with charts and images converted in about 4 minutes. Once imported, the flash presentation is saved in the default folder and needs only be re-saved once/if you change your desired settings. One cool feature is that you can point authorPOINT to a folder full of Powerpoint presentations and it will import all of them at once.

User interaction: once imported into AuthorPOINT Lite, there are 3 things you can do with a slide (a) edit its settings (more on this below), (b) edit presentation details including description and keywords (you would do that in order to make presentations accessible to search engines like Google once you publish them), and (c) create/edit a presenter’s profile, information which can be included/displayed in your output presentation.

Settings: you can define desired image quality (0-100%), audio quality (4 point scale), choose whether or not to use narration if found, allow/disallow speaker notes, and choose output template (more on these below).

Output templates: authorPOINT Lite offers 3 output templates to choose from in a variety of colors. You can think of each template as a kind of media player. Templates available are “Trade show”, a simple viewer on a white background, and “E-learning”, which includes a sidebar that can display a table of contents, a search box to hone in on the content you want, a thumbnail view, and the presenter info as defined in your authorPOINT Lite profile. The E-learning template can also display your presentation speaker notes in a bottom pane. Note that the 2 versions of the “E-learning” template (compact and standard) seem to only differ in terms of size.

Upload to authoSTREAM: once you create an account online, you are able to use AuthorPOINT Lite to upload your presentations to authorSTREAM. This allows you to share your presentation online with friends as well as to embed your presentations in your site or within email messages. It will let you upload an unlimited number of presentation of up to 30 megs each. There is also a “community” aspect of sharing and rating presentations, which personally I don’t care for very much. Overall this could be useful if you want to publish presentations online and do not want to host your presentation on your own site.

Watermark: presentations converted with authorPOINT Lite carry a small icon in the bottom right corner that displays a “powered by authorgen” tooltip when moused-over. I found this to be generally unobtrusive and generally not inappropriate.

Wish list:

Video support: converting a Powerpoint presentation with embedded video results in a flash slide that displays the first frame of the video as a static image only. It seems that support for video is provided in the full, paid authorPOINT package.

Office 2007 .pptx support: this is apparently coming very soon. Currently authorPOINT Lite supports Office XP and 2003.

Differences between free and paid versions: there are a number of differences. In truth, aside from the aforementioned video support and the ability to output to Html, Real, and “Pocket PC”, there isn’t much that the paid version has that the lite version doesn’t. I typically have an aversion to any program with the word “Lite” in its title, but not in this case.

The verdict: a well designed and useful program that offers a very nice user experience. Get it now.

Compatibility: Windows 2000/2003, XP, Vista. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

“Game, game, game and again game” is a flash platform game that looks like it is played inside somebody’s stream of consciousness or an artistic scrapbook of doodles, poetry, and philosophical musings.

Despite the name this one can more accurately be described as a toy rather than a game, as the its major draw, as far as I am concerned, is the show of images and words that unfolds as you progress through the various levels. In theory the objective is to progress through the various levels by making it to the exit; however, it is not clear what the various objects and creatures that you encounter are or what effect touching and/or interacting with these will have on your in-game sprite or the game environment. In truth, this hardly matters, as being a platform game in the traditional sense is not what this game is about.

Invariably, you will set off a spectacular show of ballpoint scribbles and doodles, words and narrative, videos and sound, which makes the game experience fell like an interactive art installation. Does it all mean anything? Probably. Maybe not; in any case, if you would like to kill some time and stimulate your brain as you’re doing it this game just may be what you’re looking for. Or not. Try it out and see.

Compatibility: Multi-platform; plays in your browser.

Makibishi Comic is a point and click flash adventure/puzzle game that features beautifully drawn and atmospheric levels. It was created by Japanese outfit Makibishi studios to provide, as they put it “an entertainment experience” and “a strange and fascinating world online”. It is playable in Japanese and English.

In many ways this is a very typical point and click flash adventure/puzzle game. It scores a lot of points by virtue of the gorgeous scenery and graphics that they have managed to pack into a browser-based flash game. It also has a very distinct Japanese/anime feeling, most prominent in the visuals but also in the dialogue.

The storyline has to do with what seems to be a ninja order of sorts (supported by little dispensable robot ninjas) which apparently shies away from confrontation in adherence to some sort of code of ethics. The game starts with the ninjas conferring amongst themselves regarding a monster named Asahi who apparently is after them and whose arrival at the scene is imminent. They decide to hide, each within one of the five different levels of the game.

At first it was a little bit confusing to me as the player as to what my role was and what I was trying to do, but I realized midway through that my task is to find and capture the ninjas, that I was in fact the ’monster’ Asahi and not a sort of director if the ninjas as I had at first assumed. Oh well, I guess you do what you have to do.

If you are not familiar with the flash point and click game genre here’s a quick primer: the objective in these games is always to trigger and/or unlock a sequence of events that will take you further into the story. In order to do this, you have to scan every inch of the game environment with the mouse in order to discover clickable elements/objects that you can use. Objects/characters which that are not clickable (or are clickable but do not seem to do anything useful) can change once another event or sequence of events take place. Generally speaking, clickable characters that do not perform a useful function may give you some information or tips to help you on your quest. Finally, some objects need to be clicked more than once in order for something to happen.

One of the five levels, in my opinion (the Saegakure level with the giant gorillas in the tree) is of rather lower quality compared to the others, but in general, the game is very well done. The characters would say things that seemed odd or even inappropriate in English but my guess is that this is due to an at times too literal translation from the Japanses. Despite these 2 gripes the game manages to deliver a spectacularly rich and atmospheric world that is as much fun to look at as it is to play. Makibish studios’ aims of delivering “a strange and fascinating world online” were certainly met in spectacular fashion.

Compatibility: This is a cross-platform browser based flash game.

Note that the game may take some time to load; the TV style color bars at the beginning are part of the game.

Samorost is a point and click flash adventure game. Since its release in 2003 it has become synonymous with the genre of point and click flash adventure games. It also inspired a host of similar titles.

This game leaves a good taste in your mouth. Played entirely by clicking on objects with the mouse, the objective is to trigger a chain of events that enables your character to surmount obstacles and to progress further into the story. The strength of this game, in my opinion lies in (a) the unpredictably wacky logic of the sequence of events that occur to take you further, and (b) the amazingly beautiful illustration of the game world and characters. I might also add (c) general overall cuteness and a nice background story.

The protagonist is a small spritely character clad in white pajamas who peacefully inhabits his asteroid/planet/spaceship, floating happily in outer space. In this, the first installment of this game, our hero looks up into his periscope to discover another asteroid that is unwittingly travelling on a collision course with his own. He takes matters into his own hands, flying his little funky orange spaceship to the other asteroid in a bid to change its course and save both planets from certain destruction.

The secret to figuring out the solutions to each stage lies in hovering over every inch of the screen with the mouse in order to find which objects may be clickable; you’ll often be surprised.

Compatibility: multiplatform: this is a flash game played entirely in the browser.

Sprout is a small flash adventure/puzzle game with a little green seed as protagonist. It features a very original premise and very simple audio-visuals and game dynamics.

Rating: 5

This game begins when coconuts drop off a palm tree on a small island off the coast. Except one of these isn’t a coconut at all, but a little green seedling who wants to be an acorn. Both the palm tree and the seedling are puzzled by this, but the palm (which apparently has a rather practical bent) points the little seedling to the spot over the horizon where the oak trees are. The seedling knows that it must travel over to that spot and take root with them.

You play the seedling and you have a very special power to help you accomplish your task. Once you run into other plants, you acquire the ability to morph into their seed and sprout as the new plant. In fact the entire game dynamic revolves around which plant to morph into in which situation in order to progress further.

This game is cute all around (the premise, the artwork, the little puzzles). The visuals look like a child’s paper-cut drawing (I love games that look like art and have decent playability (see And Yet it Moves for another good looking paper/collage themed game). It is the kind of pleasant brain-teaser that you could pick up and finish in about 20 minutes. By all means check it out.

Rooms is a free point & click flash puzzle game where the goal is to find a way out of a mansion set in some sort of alternate reality. The game can be downloaded or played online in the browser.

In Rooms, your objective is to guide your character (a Keanu Reeves lookalike replete with a long black coat straight out of the Matrix) as you try to find a way out of a mansion which looks like it belongs in Sherlock Holmes’ victorian England. The mansion is made up of rooms that can be traveled through as well as moved around, sliding-puzzle style. Each stage consists of a handful of rooms that have to be arranged and navigated such that your character can get to the exit.

But there’s more; finding your way to the exit in each level is just one part of your mission. The other part consists of a sort of meta-puzzle, whereby the arrangement of the rooms for each level you complete is in itself part of a larger puzzle.

There are a handful of object that you encounter along the way that you can use, including newspapers for information, keys for opening doors, telephones for teleporting across tiles, and a few others. There are only a handful of these, which makes for a good, streamlined gaming experience (you pretty much know what object you need for which task).

The production values in Rooms are very high, with a lot of attention paid to the visuals and the music. More importantly, it is also a very playable and engaging game that can provide hours of quality entertainment.

Note: There are 3 versions of this game; a high-quality 30 meg download, a lower quality compact version that is 16 megs, and a browser version.

Compatibility: This is a cross platform Flash game (WinAll, Mac, Linux, and others).

Version tested: 1.03

Gamma Bros is a surprisingly playable free shoot em up game that is purposely ‘retro’ in its pixellated graphics and design. It is a flash game that you can play online in your browser, but is also downloadable if you would rather play it from your hard drive.

The storyline is as follows: the brothers Buzz and Zap Gamma need to get home to earth for dinner after a hard day’s work at a giant space station near Jupiter. The long float downward is fraught with hostile enemy aliens and ships, but luckily their little spaceships come equipped with a four-way laser (that can also be upgraded to much deadlier weaponry).

Here’s what you need to know about this game:

The pixellated graphics and bleepy sounds are part and parcel of what makes this game cool; no 3d graphics; no hi-spec machines need.

Killing entire squadrons of hostiles rewards you with either coins, health canisters, or upgrades. You can use the cash to buy upgrades from the salesman that flies by from time to time.

Upgrades include double lasers, temporary shields, powerful shots, etc.

Completing levels reveals passcodes that unlock these, so that you can go straight to the advanced level once you get to it once.

This game starts off pretty slow but is quite engaging if you stick with it; what starts out as a sleepy game becomes increasingly more rewarding. If you miss for the addictive retro playability of Galaxian, Robotron, or Centipede (this game is very much a cross of the three) then you should check this one out. Oh, and its also free… what more could anybody ask for?

Compatibility: WinAll, Mac, or online through any browser

Version tested: 2.31

Movies Extractor Scout Lite scans the Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera caches for flash files (.SWF, .EXE, .FLV, and shockwave), enabling you to extract download links for them, play them, or export BMP images from these into your hard drive.

If you’ve ever wanted to download flash or shockwaves movies animations or games this program can help. Movies Extractor Scout Lite scans the Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera caches for all flash files and provides you with a download link where you can easily download them.

I have used this program to successfully download flash animations, and Youtube videos. I’ve had mixed results with Shockwave games; I was able to easily download some but not others (many shockwave games aren’t packaged neatly into a single file, making it more complicated to download them).

How it works: when you view flash files within your browser these files are saved into your browser’s cache directory. Movies Extractor Lite will look into this directory and make a list all the flash files that are there, and will enable you to view them as well as obtain a download link for where you can download them on the net. I am unclear as to why it does not seem to enable you to simple save them from the cache into the directory of your choice, but this hardly matters, as the download link provided will suffice.

How to use this program:

Since the program will look into the cache, it may be be a good idea to clean your cache first (use CCleaner). This is optional, but will make it easier to quickly find what you want.

Use one of the three above mentioned browsers and view the flash file you are interested in. Make sure the video/animation/game is fully loaded. Do this for all the files that you need.

You can then close your browser and run Movie Extractor Scout, where you will be presented with a list of all flash files in the cache (see screenshot)

Browse the list of flash files, then right-click on the file you are interested in and choose ‘Copy URL to flash movie’

Once you have this you can paste it into a download manager like Flashget to start downloading. If you don’t want to install a download manager use this service to download.

You can use your browser to view the file once it is downloaded, or you can use the Movies Extractor Scout Lite program itself. There are also free flash player programs that you can use like Flash2X or Riva FLV Player for FLV. You could also convert .SWF files into standalone executables with ApecSoft’s SWF2EXE.

Differences between the Lite and paid version: the lite version does not support viewing .FLV files without a watermark, and purportedly does not allow downloading .FLV videos from YouTube and Google Video (not sure what this means, because I was able to successfully obtain the URL and download a YouTube video with the lite version). In any case if you want a free program to download YouTube and Google videos Check out Vdownloader. There are other small differences between the lite and paid versions that are not significant.

For saving flash files, this is probably the best free program out there. Highly recommended.

Go to the program page for the latest version.

Note that Vixy allows download into a number of formats. In addition to Ipod MP4, it supports DivX encoded AVI, 3GP for Mobile, and Mac MOV format. Or if you are interested in only downloading the audio track into MP3 it can do that as well. I somehow expect that the list of supported formats will continue to grow.

Vixy is also an excellent resource for creating video RSS feeds. I used it to create a feed by keyword search and it did a great job. The RSS feed will update automatically whenever new videos are posted that are related to your search term.

This service is really cool, really fast, and, if you have an Ipod and are interested in YouTube videos, it is simply a gift.

Go to the Vixy home page.

Gorillaz Finaldrive is a little stunt-car-driving flash game.

Never thought I’d post a flash game, but this one is really well done and, well, very cool. Actually I’m not sure if there’s much of a game in there, but simply driving around in the virtual environment and trying to do stunt tricks is pretty satisfying.

This game was put together by the Gorillaz cartoon band as a kind of promotion. A great way to promote themselves in my opinion. I’m not much of a Gorillaz fan myself but I must admit the song is a really good one.
