in my case it tries to open a second instance of firefox portable so a box says the program is alreaeady running

o4. Under “System Defaults”, click on the “Check Now” button.
o5. A window will popup witht he following message:

“Firefox is not currently set as your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?”

o6. Click “Yes”

This is a pretty detailed tutorial to change the default browser. Nice walk through. I normally prefer to do it by just selecting the default browser option in "Option" section of my browser. In Google Chrome, you can go to "Options", and click button for "Make Google Chrome my default browser" In IE, go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs. Check the box for "IE should check to see if it is the default browser". When you run IE next time, it will prompt you to set IE as default, and you can do that. Similar functionality available for Firefox as well. I agree that some freeware might be an easier way to do for the users who are not technically savvy.
