Jaangle: stylish audio manager downloads info and artwork from the net

Jaangle Screenshot3Jaangle (previously Teen Spirit) is a free media/music player that provides an excellent user experience. It offers online integration (automatically downloads and displays artist information and artwork from the net) as well as full-fledged, integrated audio tag editing for every imaginable audio format.

In a crowded field of freeware music players what makes this music player/manager notable is the way it marries your music library with a world of information/artwork which it downloads from the internet. More notes below:

  • Online integration: esp. with respect to album art and images that represent the band and/or artist you are listening to, which it will automatically download from Last.FM. It will also download and display information such as artist bios, reviews, lyrics, etc.
  • The user interface: the interface consists of multiple "panes" that can be maximized, minimized, added or removed, and works very well once you get used to it.
  • Advanced search: comes with a very impressive search function. Aside from filtering by specific fields (e.g. artist, title, album, or location) it can also search lyrics, comments,and/or your own personal comments if you have them. Also keeps track of your history and can deliver interesting stats on demand (e.g. top songs, top artists for a specific time interval).
  • Tag editing: very powerful. Right click to perform all major tagging operations. For researching track information you can access online reference via right click r(e.g. AllMusic, Amazon, Discogs, etc).
  • Video playback: is also supported, although it seems restricted to .AVI (didn’t play MKV or MP4 when I tested)
  • LastFM scrobbler: can be enabled in the settings.
  • Low memory footprint: at around 25 megs in memory.

What it does not offer:

  • No Internet Radio support
  • No Audio podcast support
  • No Support for hardware devices (i.e. hardware MP3 devices)
  • No CD ripping.

The verdict: this is a great little program. It looks good, feels good, and generally provides a great user experience. The downloading of info and artwork works really well and is very well implemented. Recommended.

Version Tested: 0.97.951

Compatibility: Windows XP/2003, Vista.

Go to the program home page to download the latest version (approx 2.2 megs).

    Thnak you for the recommendation.

I really like the interface and features but no matter what I do I cannot make it sound as good as Mediamonkey, so I will not use it. After all, the sound quality is of most importance.

OOPS sorry for the triple post, they weren’t showing. Please editor feel free to delete the 2 first ones, if possible.

    Thank you.

I’ve been using Jaangle ever since the early Teen Spirit days, the main reason that it can play continuously while you load and unload other directories (like usb memory sticks) then update the playlist on the run. I’ve used it for DJ work and a community radio station and haven’t noted any loss in quality compared to other players.

tribedenis, fair enough and happy for you.

to me however you cannot even compare, to start you only get 3 equalizer bars vs 10 on mediamonkey.

and you don’t even get any output sound options (or plugins to ad some) just a default one.

and please don’t get me wrong, i like the program but is far from being at the same level at some other ones. to be fair, they are just starting, if they put more effort to their sound quality i will be the first one to use it because i like interface and some of their features.

i also dj, and am a musician.

Thanks music2 – I agree. We don’t require eq on radio and my system at home is set to reproduce as close as possible to what the record producer intended, so I just use a good sound card. I do use a multi-band equaliser on the DJ system, but that’s external. I use Mediamonkey a little, usually to change file format etc. but haven’t played with the eq – I’ll give it a try
What do you think is wrong with the sound output? – and perhaps have a word to Alex on the forum and he may be able to assist, I’ve had some great ideas from him and I know he’s working to improve the program.
My personal system uses a Soundblaster card and an interface from Elan Audio to reduce noise. The computer speakers are Altec Lansing 6121 and my sound system has Acoustic Research 3A speakers.
    regards
