There used to be another interesting option, but today, I cannot find it…
RSS news at your Screensaver. Some years ago, someone at Microsoft published an application to test the new NET language…

You were able to choose a folder with photographs to show, your city of residence and a number of RSS news to check when the screensaver activated.

It worked as a charm. The Microsoft took it to include it as a sample with their NET kit. But, now it is impossible to find again.

Perhaps, I should search in my backups…

There are also ways to recieve RSS feeds with your IM tool. E.g. Miranda has a plugin for getting RSS feeds, probably also other IM have such a possibility or addon.

I am trying out Feedly. Considering a review.
I used Feeddemon about a year ago but like RSSOwl better. However, I did not know it had Google Reader integration, so will take another look.

(Note that: 1. you need to be on the Chrome Dev channel to use it, 2. it is BETA because Chrome Dev is BETA, and for instance now it does not work, the Chrome release two days ago broke it, but will be fixed in a couple of days.)
