There used to be another interesting option, but today, I cannot find it...
RSS news at your Screensaver. Some years ago, someone at Microsoft published an application to test the new NET language...

You were able to choose a folder with photographs to show, your city of residence and a number of RSS news to check when the screensaver activated.

It worked as a charm. The Microsoft took it to include it as a sample with their NET kit. But, now it is impossible to find again.

Perhaps, I should search in my backups...

Nice post, thank you!

The best free rss reader and podcatcher I've ever used - the pro version has even more features

RSS-owl is also very capable for RSS and is open-source, as you mentioned.

Thanks guys for some great feedback!
I am trying out Feedly. Considering a review.
I used Feeddemon about a year ago but like RSSOwl better. However, I did not know it had Google Reader integration, so will take another look.

http://tpgooglereader.googlecode.com/ - with this Chrome extension new items automatically open in new (background) tabs in your browser.

(Note that: 1. you need to be on the Chrome Dev channel to use it, 2. it is BETA because Chrome Dev is BETA, and for instance now it does not work, the Chrome release two days ago broke it, but will be fixed in a couple of days.)
