Web browser – I check my feeds with Opera.

    Brief addon for Firefox.

I use the Sage-Too extension for Firefox.

Used to use Klipfolio but it has a nasty habit of breaking feeds constantly. The only way to fix them is to delete them and add them back from scratch, which means you have to reconfigure them all over again. No thanks.

I was hesitant to start using RSS because I didn’t want to start using another app just for that purpose.

I then found out that Thunderbird reads RSS-feeds, so now I get all RSS updates right into my email app like emails, it works well with the core Thunderbird RSS reader, but the Forumzilla addon ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/133 ) really takes it up a notch.

http://tpgooglereader.googlecode.com/ – with this Chrome extension new items automatically open in new (background) tabs in your browser.

(Note that: 1. you need to be on the Chrome Dev channel to use it, 2. it is BETA because Chrome Dev is BETA, and for instance now it does not work, the Chrome release two days ago broke it, but will be fixed in a couple of days.)

The best free rss reader and podcatcher I’ve ever used – the pro version has even more features

RSS-owl is also very capable for RSS and is open-source, as you mentioned.

There are also ways to recieve RSS feeds with your IM tool. E.g. Miranda has a plugin for getting RSS feeds, probably also other IM have such a possibility or addon.

Another one that I like is Snackr, which is an Adobe Air application and can be run in a few different modes. http://snackr.net/

There used to be another interesting option, but today, I cannot find it…
RSS news at your Screensaver. Some years ago, someone at Microsoft published an application to test the new NET language…

You were able to choose a folder with photographs to show, your city of residence and a number of RSS news to check when the screensaver activated.

It worked as a charm. The Microsoft took it to include it as a sample with their NET kit. But, now it is impossible to find again.

Perhaps, I should search in my backups…

    Nice post, thank you!

I use Opera browser’s in-built off-line feed reader. It is impressive and feature rich.
