KDE Window Resizer: move and resize windows from anywhere, in the style of KDE Linux

KDE Window Resizer screenshotKDE Window Resizer is a free portable app that brings to XP and Vista the window moving and resizing functionality found in the KDE Linux environment. It allows you to press ALT and move your windows by left-clicking and dragging from anywhere, without having to click on the title bar, and to resize by right clicking and dragging, without needing to grab the edges. Moving a window so its edge is offscreen and following it by a right mouse-click will conveniently snap your window to the edge of the screen.

Honestly I feel like I’ve said all that’s to be said about this app in the introductory paragraph above. My advice to you is to download it and see if you like it. But for now, as an added bonus, let’s do a bit of a Q&A:

Q: Why would I want to use this? What’s the value-added?
A: The idea is to allow moving windows without having to grab the title bar, and to resize them without having to grab the edges. It’s just a nice way to work with open windows, makes moving them around and sizing them much more versatile once you get used to it. The snap to edge functionality is also a very nice addition.

Q: is this just for XP?
A: No, its for Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

Q: So how does this work, exactly?
A: Press Alt then left-click anywhere on your window to move it. To resize, press Alt then right click and move your mouse horizontally or vertically. Snapping to the screen’s edge involves moving the window such that it’s edge is off-screen, and following it up with a quick right-click. Note that multiple monitors are not supported.

Q: How much memory does it consume?
A: Approximately six megs, which is quite reasonable.

Q: Any last words? What’s your verdict?
A: Overall a nice app. If you’re a bit of a geek like me you’ll definitely like this extra functionality.

Version tested: 1.0.47.5

Compatibility: Windows XP, Vista, Seven.

Go to the program page to download the latest version (approx 218K).

NOTE: if you have trouble downloading make sure you are not using a download manager. If that doesn’t solve the problem in IE you might need to download in Firefox or another browser.

Why is this listed under web development?

This program might work on Windows 7 but Windows 7 already has a basic system in place. Drag the title bar to the top of the screen and it will maximise the window. Drag it to the side of the screen and it will maximise the height and set the windows width to half of the screen.

BTW sorry I’ve not got back to you yet on other matters but my work load has sky rocketed.

winmover offers the same functionality and the possibility to minimize and maximize windows. It also requires less memory.

AltDrag = Same functionality – much memory usage

It’s showing at under 1.5MB for me at the moment. Plenty customizable too.

alt+left click is a very bad idea: it’s useless for anybody who uses any image editing software (Photoshop, etc) professionally, the alt key being a frequent tool modifier.

no multimonitor support is a show stopper these days.

also, 6 megs is not reasonable for such limited functionality.

Taekwindow (http://taekwindow.sourceforge.net/) blows this dead in the water, without breaking a sweat: more functions, including the God sent “scroll window under mouse” feature, and with only 3 megs on my 4Gb RAM system.

Personally i have no interest in this software, but i would just like to say that this entry on freewaregenius, the way it is written and explained, showcases what a fantastic blog this is!

    Go, Samer, go! :D

Quite nice. It only uses 2.5MB memory on my system. It’s also portable, which I like. Thanks!

    I’m using taekwindow http://taekwindow.sourceforge.net/
which also gives me a scroll-under-the-cursor functionality
