The problem is that novelists need to see the novel in an overview. At least, some of us need this. Flipping through screens does not convey which character is getting too many chapters or how many chapter elapse from one event to another. I tried to use Vue for this task, but it is very ponderous once you get beyond the sketchy stuff. I did find it easier for quick things such as a reference page on which characters are connected to which locations, the love/hate/respect, etc, relationships among characters, and I wish I could have made it less ponderous and unwieldy. Of course, Vue is not made for novel mapplng, but the visual picture of the novel was what I wanted, not a set of screens.

Tried this software, and I liked it...but it didn't stay on my computer. Why?

It was too taxing trying to organize my information the way this software wanted me to. In writing, I tend to be much more freeform with structure. The Chapter View of this software was incredibly useful in that regard.

Then I found Treepad, and, well, I couldn't really find any functionality of StorYbook that I actually used that couldn't be found in Treepad (which runs faster on my computer, too).

StorYbook's useful for some, not so for others...but it's free, so try it out before you judge.

I've also been using for a while now and I must say that if you're wanting not only the organization, but the actual writing to happen in one place, it's definitely the way to go. ;P

In the days, I was disgusted by Dramatica; it didn't bring me anything but headaches. I had to write everything twice: once in Dramatica, then in my story, and keeping tracks of what I was doing in between the two places -- like keeping my accounting on Quickbooks, mostly wasting time duplicating what I was already doing by hand.

StoryBook doesn't escape that crowd for me. Most of its basic features can be had with OpenOffice and some brain cells. Basically, though, it is a very good -- and HUGE reporting -- program for beginners as well as to visualize the status of whatever you entered yourself. Top it off with the price, it's a winner compared to Dramatica.

My take, of course, for I may be wrong.
Surf' up, dudes and dudettes!

I have to say, I had to Google twice for the site, then come here and check if the damn article had a link to the site. Way to go, having a TINY line at the END of the article is absolutely AWESOME.

Another program you can try is yWriter 5 which offers similar functionality. I have been keeping tabs on this for a few years now, and 5 is quite fully featured, plus it allows editing in situ.

I have recently started a pet project, and it really helps. No direct equivalent for the Who was where, when feature though that I can readily remember, BUT I am new to the program. Closest seems to be a feature tracking the viewpoint characters in each scene. The writer is a published author, so that says something.

I still use the free software RoughDraft (Windows only), which is exceedingly simple but features a useful notepad on the right of the main text that makes for great random notes here and there, but they stay associated with that particular document and show up handily on the side every time you open your main document. The main text is rich text format (RTF) by default, and the notes are saved as plain text files, so if you stop using RoughDraft, you still can open everything on any operating system.
