Yeah VirtualBox is also my one and only favorite but I'm not sure if it will run on WS2008 (unsupported OS at least). Anyway, BAD (?) news for VB users, Oracle as acquired Sun, lets see if the free-for-home-users policy will stand... http://www.virtualization.info/2009/04/oracle-acquires-sun-and-gets-its-whole.html

[...] VMWare Server: free Virtual Machine Infrastructure, step-by-step I’ve previously discussed virtual server infrastructure with an article on Microsoft’s Hyper-V which comes included with Windows Server 2008. Due to the performance hit that a Server 2008 machine will take just by having the Hyper-V role installed, I went looking for another solution. I had a few criteria though. Since I was just doing this for myself and my own curiosity, I wanted it to be free or near there. I also wanted it to have as little performance impact as possible, but produce a fully stable and functional virtual machine. [...]

Thanks for that guide - not exactly a smooth run unless you have a pretty good u\idea about what you are doing and what to expect.
Sun's virtualBox is, on the other hand really quite simple - I had it up and running with nary an idea as to what I was doing in Ubuntu to run XP in about 30mins - had a few problems going the other way round XP hosting Ubuntu but even then it was pretty easy. Also: 600mb - jeez thats a bit hefty - virtual box is 62mb!

[...] VMWare Server starts with an almost 600 MB download and leaves you with little impression that anything was actually installed. A desktop icon and Start Menu entry are created, but it took some manual reading to figure out how and where exactly to get started.”…..[freewaregenius] [...]
