@ Wintermule: I have reviewed Splayer. http://www.freewaregenius.com/2009/12/21/splayer-impressive-lightweight-media-player-that-packs-quite-a-punch/
However, reader feedback was less enthusiastic. I got reports that it was buggy, hard to remove, and other complaints. So now I am reluctant to endorse it.
These days my favorite player is VLC, actually.

Concerning the free media players KMPlayer has not worked for me. I get choppy playback, audio and video out of sync among other complaints. I usually read these lists about must have programs, KM and others always listed under best media players. Some time ago I found one called Splayer (Shoot Player), it is Chinese and I've never gone back to any other player. Plays all formats, excellent colors, GPU-Acceleration, low CPU comsumption and the most accurate subtitle finder function I've seen. You should really take a look at this particular player, you won't be dissapointed.
Here's the link: http://www.splayer.org/index.en.html

Please let me know what you people think.

I used to love Digsby but one day I realized it sometimes cross sends messages to receipients from an account inaccurate. I had 2 Yahoo accounts, which had seperate buddy lists and I were chatting with a buddy from one Yahoo account, suddenly I noticed that Digsby just sent messeges to the receipient from the other Yahoo ID, which is absolutely dengerous.

I also find their cloud computing phishy...

My best choice is Pidgin now, for desktop.

These are the software I install every time I get the chance:

1) AVG
2) AdAware
3) Glary Utilities (it's like CCleaner with more options)
4) Firefox+plugins AdBlock, Webmail Notifier (without plugins I'd use Chrome or Opera)
5) The KMPlayer (because it also plays TV and audio)
6) IZArc
7) utorrent
-------------------
8) OpenOffice (optional - I prefer Google Docs)

Oau ..great resources.
I use some of the tools listed above.. Great list! I use 7-Zip instead of Universal Extractor though.. It is very small, light on resources and opens all kinds of archives.. One other tool that you may have missed out on is an iso image reader.

Digsby - supposedly Digsby's EULA says they can download "work" to your pc and use your unused cpu cycles to do research etc. You can opt out by digging through the menu system and Unchecking a checkbox that is checked by default.

@Brian: That's a little harsh, and not helpful. You should explain why sweepram is worse than useless (I agree that it is, but calling people idiots doesn't help them make better choices in the future).

My list; by no means everything, but the bare minimum for a "useful" Windows computer, in my opinion:

1. Avast anti-virus
2. ALzip or 7zip (ALzip is prettier, 7zip more powerful)
3. PageDefrag
4. ioBit's Smart Defrag
5. Notepad2 installed as a replacement for notepad
6. Hostsman and HostsServer (I use only the MVPS.org hosts file)
7. Firefox
8. Thunderbird
9. OpenOffice
10. FastStone Viewer
11. FastStone Resizer
12. Audiograbber
13. LAME_enc.dll (for Audiograbber)
14. Blade_Enc.dll (for Audiograbber)
15. CDburnerXP
17. VideoLAN (aka VLC Media Player)
18. Paint.NET

Yes, it's more than 10. No, I won't remove any from the list. Without those, the PC is incomplete.
