The newest version (0.5.4) now supports ID3v2.
The two whishlists are also implemented, even though the second is more experimental :
* The option to autodetect silences and create split points without actually splitting
* Visually representing the audio waves in the “Player” tab, in the style of a sound editor such as Audacity.

Why is this program so big (17MB)?? It makes me quite amazed at what mp3DirectCut can do when the executable is only 53.0KB (!!!) and it’s truly portable. If you already have CUE sheets and know how to edit split points in the CUE sheets, I’d stick with mp3DirectCut.

-Doesn’t support ID3v2 tags. AAAAAIIIIIEEEEEE!!
-Fouls up VBR files encoded with LAME, produces tracks with glitches.

Swear to god I’ve tried every splitting program out there, and they’ve all got issues with LAME VBR files and/or poor tagging support.

Audacity converts the song to ‘wav’ and then reconverts the ‘wav’ to mp3 or ogg. The process is very slow and the result could lead to loss of quality.

Doesn’t Audacity do this too? I’ve always resorted to it for this type of work.

MP3 Album Maker http://www.makeitone.net/audio/mp3albummaker.htm will join/split sets of MP3s. Audiobooks are commonly split every 3 minutes or so to make it easy to move between the parts. Songs are short and MP3 players are optimized for that.

Do you know of a program that does the opposite of this? One that takes many mp3 files and makes them into a single file? I have several audiobooks that I ripped from CDs, but there are dozens of tracks on each one, and when a book goes through 6 CDs you can imagine how many files that is. I’d love to be able to put them in order and turn them into one file for my Ipod if possible.

I’ve been using MP3DirectCut up to now. Not only does Mp3splt-gtk handle OGG files as well, but it seems to have many more settings than MP3DirectCut. I’ll give it a try.
