Dude, WOW, can't thank u enough!

Just cleaned up a huge collection of music with this and Duplicate Cleaner u also featured here.

I was avoiding doing so on the basis that it would take me a week or so to get the job done, but with this and DC, I actually accomplished this most dreadful task in under 3 hours!

Xrecode is just AWESOME. It automagically recognized my quad-core CPU and went on converting 4 files simultaneously, taking ALL the cycles available. Beautiful. It took me less than 15 min. to convert some 10Gb of Zep albums into insanely good mp3s just by dragging and dropping the .cue files into it's interface. Two thumbs up!

Keep up the GREAT work, thanks again!

Almost forgot, in v. 2.31, there is a minimum length feature that makes the split by silence function work much better than the version reviewed above. It's great for converting and splitting just about anything.

I contacted the author about adding Mono output to MP3 files and he wrote me back in minutes and said he would do it. Now THAT is a great freeware author. I've been using this program more and more and am just amazed at the speed and ease of use.

[...] Windows only: Free application Xrecode converts your audio files from popular formats to any of the same formats. While it may not have the complexity and advanced features of previously mentioned MediaEncoder Audio Edition, it’s also less complicated to use—just drag files you want to convert into Xrecode, choose the output format, and get started. Xrecode also sets itself apart with smart options for splitting audio by CUE files or by silence—perfect for quickly splitting large audio files, like your vinyl-to-MP3 conversion. Xrecode is freeware, Windows only. Xrecode [via FreewareGenius] [...]

@Chirs,
I actually was not aware that MP3 Directcut had automatic gap detection. Thanks for clarifying this.

In your article you imply that MP3DirectCut can only be used for manual split, but it has an excellent silence detection and splitting feature that can also be set to skip XX number of seconds after each cut, the obvious upside is that you won't create 2 second "songs" by using this feature. I use MP3DC for audiobook splitting, ripping and combining all disks and then splitting with silence detection into 15min segments, and it works very well. I will check this program out to be sure, because it could eliminate my need for a converter during my audiobook cleanup sessions.

I'd add RealMedia to the wishlist. It's easy enough to convert between many of these formats and many of the formats are readable on many portable devices. So the real test of function is whether it can handle the formats that are marginal and most in need of conversion.
