[...] Windows only: Free snapshot backup utility DocShield provides a similar service to previously-mentioned FileHamster, but with a lot more control over how often, and how big, those backups should be. Select individual files or groups of certain file types (like .jpg or .xls in the My Documents folder, for instance) on your home computer, networked systems, or even remote FTP servers, set DocShield to check at certain increments, and choose whether those backups are compressed or not. Better still, the program offers a utility to save a file and its versions onto a USB drvie, along with a utility to read and re-save it. For those looking for a Time-Machine-like utility for Windows but don’t need entire systems backed up, DocShield is a helpful tool. DocShield is a free download for Windows systems only.
Great review, thanks.

I also have tried filehamster in the past and had problems with archiving very large sets of files which I need to do. Seems that this (Docshield) may have similar problems but hopefully reviews like this will help (incentivize) the developers to sort these issues out.

Currently I use Instabackup which is a PC magazine utility and therefore not freeware (but almost as the annual subscription to download all their utilities is so cheap). It does the job I need with backup over the home network but is far from perfect particularly in terms of feedback through the GUI on what is happening and what has been completed. However it does keep versions on an instantaneous basis and got me out of whole a few weeks back on a post that became corrupted in livewriter.

I am always on the lookout for the right freeware alternative, so thanks again for the review.

[...] Automatically backup and retrieve earlier incarnations of your files with DocShield | freewaregenius.... This looks like a fantastic tool for people that are working with lots of text stuff–a doctoral thesis, book, whatever. Since it’s more for versioning, it’s not really built for photos, but it still might be worth looking at for that as well… [...]

Seems to be similar to my favorite filehamster which is also free, portable, and has been featured here previously.

Keep it up Samer, great info as usual!
