I hate tooltips. With AudioShell, they turned to nags for me - there's no option to disable them (except hacking the registry). Nice feature: add extra columns to Explorer, BUT: Windows has no easy way to apply this to a range of selected folders.
MediaInfo is indispensable (along with GSpot), while Filetip and Thumbview are somewhat redundant.

There are plenty of small fancy add-ons, but still no good tool to display and compare tags in a convenient, orderly fashion in Explorer.

Be VERY careful with MediaInfo's context menu support. That's the "right-click" option in the configuration menu. I turned it off because it doesn't play well with others and right-click response turned into a crawl. I'm not sure exactly what causes the problem as I use multiple context menu extensions. Nonetheless, the handler for MediaInfo is programmed poorly or it wouldn't have this problem. It also defaults to M which is the standard letter for renaming. Doubleplusungood.

[...] Windows only: Freeware utility MediaInfo adds a wealth of information to the file tooltips—the boxes you see when mousing over a file&mash;for a range of video and audio files. It works similarly to previously mentioned Infotag Magic, and for those working a decent amount with video and audio conversion programs, MediaInfo can help cut back on file confusion and give you a heads-up on a file’s resolution and size. MediaInfo is a free download for Windows XP and earlier only. MediaInfo [via FreewareGenius] [...]

What's REALLY needed!??

A GOOD modern similar Utility that will allow the "attachment" of descriptive .txt files to each and every computer file one wishes to. NOT universally, but just...selectively. To remind (or any number of other uses) the User what that file/image/folder/....is about!

There are some "ancient" such utilities (Hob Comment, Explorer Notes,....). But, this is 2008 already!! Any good freeware programmers reading this that want a new Project? Please!!!

The world needs a nifty new light-resource-use "tag memo" utility for Explorer items. Tanx.

http://www.mutschler.de/mp3ext/ MP3Ext adds a shell handler for MP3 files which displays custom icons to show the bitrate of the first frame (I think that's how it choses which icon to use for VBR files.)
KMPlayer does something similar when it is the default player but the icon associations aren't (yet) sticky enough to survive registry cleaners.

I have been using Audioshell for years, its one of my favorite programs. I use it all the time to edit tags. Another huge benefit is that it can do a batch of files at once. Very handy
