I like ErgoNotes (htp://www.ergonotes.com) because there are both Pocket PC and Desktop versions. So I can have my notes with me everywhere.

My favorite hierarchical note taking program that I’ve been using for nearly 10 years is TreePad Lite:

It’s free, tiny (<500kb), portable, light (consumes ~5mb of memory), and has decent search functionality (can search globally and replace within notes). It basically serves all my needs (I don’t need nor want RTF editing), so you may want to give it a shot.

Another good option is SEO Note (http://www.seonote.info/). This is the first hierarchical note program I ever used and is stil one of my favorites.

Okay, I said that EverNote is no longer free. I was wrong. See this page: http://www.evernote.com/support/faq/ Basically it says that although the downloadable version is a “Trialware”, after 60 days it reverts to the Free version. So, I guess it’s still free after all.

The problem with the “wiki”-type systems is that you must type markup symbols for everything… Aren’t we a bit beyond that?

I created a free TiddlyWiki-based notes adaptation that gives easy hierarchical indexing and formatting plus all the things TiddlyWiki offers (embedding photos and video, searching, tables, tags, organizing notes in multiple ways, portability, etc)

One or two weeks ago, the full version of EverNote portable was offered at Giveawayoftheday.com. I got a copy, of course. As to Shirusupad (a pity it seems to be discontinued), a free “alternative” could be MemPad, available at: http://home.mnet-online.de/horst.muc/wmem.htm.

Why? Simply because I have lots of bits of information that can’t really fit into a hierarchical system. With EverNote, I can finally achieve the nirvana of classifying a bit of info into several classifications at once.

Another alternative for just note taking (no rich text) would be shirusupad: small, simple, standalone, lot of features for just taking notes. F.i.:
- password secure notes
- notes as stickies on the desktop
- URL-highlighting
- very small footprint (on my machine: 500kB minimized, around 1,2 MB maximized)
- reminders
- auto save of the notes as you write them

Only drawback: developer seems to be vanished and gone.

Or use WikidPad, which has wiki functionality.

It has a slight learning curve, but building a network of notes, thoughts, journals in it is so convenient… I basically input almost everything in it and can logically find anything within seconds.
