Audit your MP3 library with MP3-Check

MP3Check ScreenshotDescription: MP3 Check allows you to audit your library of MP3 audio files for songs that do not meet your desired quality and volume criteria. It lets you define a handful of standards to check you audio library against (ID3 tag presence/absence, bit rate, sample rate, and volume) and will scan your folders for MP3s that do not comply with these.

As your music library grows and grows wouldn’t be great if you could use a tool to identify those songs that, say, are low in (bit-rate) quality or whose volume is too low? MP3 Check is such a tool that will use your own standards to audit your library and identify those audio files that do not meet them.

You can set MP3 Check such that it will **optionally** perform the following tests on your collection; note, however, that you can also choose NOT to perform any of the below tests simply by unchecking the box next to it in the main MP3-Check interface.

  • MP3s with ID3v1 tags missing
  • MP3s with ID3v2 tags missing
  • MP3s that are either under a minimum user-defined bit rate or otherwise over a user-defined bit rate.(If, say. you don’t want it to check for a max bit rate simply enter a very large number in the max kbps box)
  • MP3s that are under a given sample rate
  • Finally (and this one is my favorite), MP3s that are under (or over) a given gain volume.

The output: once it completes its search you can view the resulting list of files in a tree structure within the MP3-Check interface. Clicking the “save” button will produce (a) a log/text file equivalent of the results in the directory which was scanned, (b) an m3u playlist of the files with insufficient CBR bit rates, and (c) an m3u playlist with insufficient gain volume. Having these playlists allows you to easily load them up in your media player or tag manager for volume adjustment, editing, deletion, etc.

Wish list:

  • The ability to forgo having to determine a max bit rate or max volume if you’re only interested in the lower end. I tried to leave the max bit rate blank but that only caused an error. (Enter a very large number instead)
  • The ability to right click on an entry in the results (or a number of CTRL-selected entries) and move them to another folder, delete them, or open them using another program.

Version tested: 1.0.24.0

Compatibility: Windows 98, ME, 2000 SP3, XP SP2, Server 2003, Vista. Requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

Go to the download page to get the latest version (approx 502K). Also visit the program home page.

I’ve tried this on Vista 64bit (.Net 3.0)… couldn’t get it too work though, it crashes as soon as it opens, the website lacks a community and a quick search on Google didn’t give any answers either.

As I’m always interested in feature wishes of MP3-Check, I tried to find time for implantation of yours. Today the version 1.0.26.0 is published, so now you can leave the bit rate fields blank and you have the ability to right click on the result and use your configured MP3 Tools.
So my be you like to renew your test and add some wishes.
