How to quickly ‘un-frame’ a site in Internet Explorer

IECrap ZoomFrame in IE Context Menu

Have you ever been surfing the net with IE and ended up on a page that is stuck in a frame from another site? Typically in these instances the URL being shown is that of the framing website, with a frames scrollbar surrounding the page whose content you are viewing (which is actually the page you are interested in).

In some instances framing sites provide a way for the user to click out of the frame and onto the ’real page’, but in many cases they do not, which can be really annoying. Wouldn’t be great if there was a single simple button you could push to ’de-frame’ a site?

Well, there is. Here’s how to do it with an (unfortunately named) free program called IECrap.

  1. Download IECrap from the developer’s home page (only 24K)
  2. iecrap install optionsRun the installer and select “Zoom Frame”; you can deselect the other components (see screenshot).
  3. That’s it. The next time you’re browsing a framed website, all you have to do is select “Zoom Frame” from IE’s right click context menu and your webpage will be instantly de-framed (see first screenshot above)

You might also want to check out the other 2 components. “Window Sizer” installs a dropdown that can be used to quickly change the size of the IE window. “Debug Box” is a debugging tool for developers which I didn’t really look into very much.

Note on compatibility: I am using this with IE7 no problem, even when the compatibility blurb on the website states “(IE 4.0->6.0…)”.

Go to the IECrap developer’s page to get the latest version (approx 24K).
