I don’t know of any program that does this for AVIs. It sound very unlikely to me that such a thing would exist.

Carbonize. Here’s what I did before I wrote my response above:

- I manually stripped 3 random MP3s from my collection from all tags and renamed them, then ran them through auto-tagging in both QMP and Picard. Picard recognized all 3 no problem, QMP recognized none, and prompted me to enter the data manually.

- Next I converted 3 songs that I downloaded in FLV format to MP3s. I checked that there weren’t any associated tags, then attempted autotagging in both programs. Picard was NOT able to identify any of them, while QMP presented a number of suggestions, all of whom were incorrect.

- Note that I did hunt around on the QMP website to see what kind of autotagging technology it used. Not sure how I might have missed the digitial thumbprinting feature, though.

Actually QMP creates a waveform (digital thumbprint) of the track and checks it that way. The same way you can identify a track by playing it over the phone.

If you load your tracks into the Media Library of QMP it will automatically start trying to identify them on Gracenote.

I just checked out QMP; there’s no way QMP will identify or tag a track for you unless (a) it contains a CDDB ID, or (b) it actually has metadata/tags that identify it (or a descriptive file name), or finally (c) failing the above, it would require that the user identify the track by actually inputting info.

Musicbrainz Picard, on the other hand, can find information automatically by creating a digital thumbrint and comparing it to the MusicBrainz database, which is a very different technology/approach, and ultimately more powerful in identifying tracks.

Or you could just use QMP from http://quinnware.com which has had auto tagging for over a year now and is written by a guy who works for Gracenote. Or get the latest Winamp beta which also features auto tagging using Gracenote.
