Still slow? The last time I tried Open Office was a few years ago. Its startup time compared to MS Office was then quite long. Annoyingly long. Anybody any idea how it compares these days?

I found this statement interesting: "Microsoft has worked incredibly hard to become the standard in every single way..." This is entirely true of course, but that's not why it is so interesting.

I wonder if the fact that Microsoft Office *is* such a standard hasn't helped everyone in some ways? For example, the de facto file format for word processing is .doc. Sure, OpenOffice can save in many formats, but if you save it as .doc you know it can be read just about anywhere. Regardless of the future of Microsoft Office, I think this will remain one of the benefits (few?) of the Office hegemony.

What I like about it is the fact that you can save the documents as .doc if you have to send them to somebody as attachments. Otherwise I just save them as open office document to keep the files in my computer. For word processing purposes, I also use AbiWord. It is only a standalone word processor application, nothing more, but it is cool.

After many years of M$, I left M$ Office to use exclusively OpenOffice. I don't have any problem, it is legal and free to download and install.

A few days ago I installed it to my neighbors: the father was about to buy the expensive M$ Office to his 11 years old boy... but it got OpenOffice for free from the Internet in minutes.

Like any new software you have to get used to it, but in this case the learning time is really minimal. Unfortunately at work I still have to use M$ Office because many (future-blind) managers are scared about shifting to open source; but I am confidant that things will change in the future.

When OpenOffice will win the market, M$ will deliver the source code of Office for free... who will use it then ?!

David... thanks for mentioning OpenOffice.org's export to PDF function (I modified our original review to mention this feature).

Stephen... just wanted to comment on what you said. I am in fact what you would call a power user of Excel, and 90% of what I do at work I do by programming Excel in VBA.

For me, substituting Excel for Ooo Calc is not possible, although I gladly would forgo Word and Powerpoint for the Ooo equivalents.

Every new PC we buy we get Open Office rather than M$ Office as it is almost impossible to justify the expense of the M$ product when Open Office is cross-compatible (it can open and save in M$ format) and does everything you need in a normal average office environment.

Perhaps there are some power users who really need some obscure M$ Office features, but unless you are in that very unlikely position, it is hard as a business to make any argument for the Microsoft option when something excellent and free does the same things.

I agree I use it in my business exclusively now and have no problems. When sending documents via e mail I use the save as pdf (included in all applications)so it can always be opened at the other end
