QT Address Bar

QT Address Bar ScreenshotRating: 55 Star Rating

Version tested: 0.9.2

Description: QT Address Bar is an explorer extension that brings to Windows XP a folder “breadcrumbs” navigation functionality (an interactive folder hierarchy structure that is flat and can be navigated at every node in the path).

QT Address bar is brought to you by the same developer behind QT Tab Bar, one of my favorite explorer extensions. It is similar to Explorer Breadcrumbs in that they both bring to Windows XP the folder breadcrumbs functionality first introduced in Windows Vista.

The breadcrumb bar explained: imagine a folder path (say “C:\Program Files\MediaMonkey\Plugins”). In a breadcrumb bar each node (i.e. section separated by “\”) is clickable and, once clicked, produces an interactive drop down menu of all locations that are immediately accessible from that node (see screenshot).

The verdict: this is a very useful program; once (and if) you get used to navigating the folder breadcrumbs it will be hard to not have it on your computer. I like QT Address Bar slightly better than Explorer Breadcrumbs because this one functions both as an address bar and breadcrumb bar (it behaves like an address bar but once you click the little arrow on the right hand side of the dialog it turns into a breadcrumb bar). I like this because it allows me to eliminate Windows’ own address bar and therefore to reduce clutter.

Compatibility: Windows XP, Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 or later.

Go to the developer’s page to get the latest version (approx 80K). [Thanks to reader Angel Ezquerra for telling me about this program].

Just to let you know - the vista breadcumb bar works the same way only in reverse. If you click the icon to the left it turns into a standard address bar. You can also right click and copy the address as text.

Click your current location in Explorer Breadcrumb and it turns into address bar until you click elsewhere. Had you missed that? :)

Also I wanted to say that these utilities for explorer you review are really brilliant find, they almost make it usable. :)

PS FYI I installed explorer breadcrumbs on friend’s notebook and it had pretty bad fight with google toolbar, they almost killed each other and were crashing internet explorer while at it… May turn some people away.

I wish they could add Back and forward buttons on the left in vista style. Or even fake search on the right, that way it would be usable with styler toolbar.

Hi, I have a problem with this address bar. After I installed it, my Internet didn’t work well. I don’t know what the explorer.exe bar has with internet, but it’s making some influence. When I try to enter any web address, my browser opens a Not Found page, or a default search page, in any browser (Netscape, Mozilla, IE7…), if i persist, pressing enter key many times, it opens the web site, so, the problem is not the site or the browser, is my configuration. I formated my compurer, and the problem returned at the same momment I re-installed the QT Address Bar. The bar is activated just in explorer, not in the browser. Please, help me if this problem make any sense for you. Thanks!!

    hi guilherme,

i’ve been using qt b.. for sometime now. yes, you’re right that the bar is activated only in ‘WE’ and not in ‘IE’. but it doesn’t affect your IE at all. the problem seems to be in your IE settings. try clearing the cache/index.dat. if you’re using any proxy settings, make sure it’s on. if you’re not using any proxy then disable it. (IE:Tools>Internet Options).

try ccleaner. you can get it from programfiles or freewaregenius or any other freeware download site.
