Urban Terror is another free standalone first person shooter based on the Quake 3 engine. It offers a realistic contemporary combat mod with an emphasis on playability.

This game apparently started life as a mod in 1999. You can now download it as a standalone game thanks to the open source release of the Quake 3 engine in 2005. Like World of Padman, Urban Terror is a product of the Ioquake3 project, an enhanced, souped up version of the Quake 3 engine with better graphics and sound and added features.

This is a multiplayer only game that has all the usual FPS elements. It also features some innovate gameplay elements such as ledge grabbing, wall jumping, and power sliding, variations on in-game acrobatics that allow a player better physical maneuverability. Another notable addition is ’stamina’, which of course also brings with it the ’medic’ character that can help heal other characters and/or increase their stamina.

I spent a good chunk of time testing this game for this review and my overall impression is that (a) this is a very good game with extremely well-crafted levels, (b) it is either very hard to master, or the team that my team were up against were way above our league. It seemed that no sooner did I spot an opponent than I was successfully targeted and killed despite my best effors. I also get the impression that all of the games based on the Quake 3 engine have a very similar, somewhat chaotic quality to their gameplay (in the past 2 weeks I played 3 games based on Quake 3, including Podman and Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory).

The last word is: if you like good multiplayer shooters you’ll love this one. Check it out.

Compatibility: Windows; a fairly decent specs and decent graphics card (the website does not offer detailed specs – sorry). Tested on Windows XP.

The game home page. Go to the download page to get the latest version (you need boith insallers, 1 meg and 531 megs respectively). If you want Autoupdates you will have to install the "Battleye patch" which you will find on the site.

  • This game is worth your trouble people, ive been playing this since the early beginning and even then, it was the most entertaining and addicting FPS i have ever come across, if youre interested, dont be afriad too get owned, because you will, feel free too ask around for tips too the “good”player, most will welcome the new influx of gamers and would gladly help you out.

This game isn’t worth it if you are expecting a more realistic tactical combat game (with the first versions of it, it was similar to CS, I guess that’s why the creators went back to a semi-quake game in style). The graphics in this game are pretty good for a free game (coming from the Quake 3: Arena engine) but gameplay will kill you. The climbing over walls, powersliding, bunny hopping and wall jumping start to confuse all but the most experienced players. I disagree though with Lemming, I found virulent people in my attempt to get experience while getting owned (at least in the servers). I uninstalled this game and will keep it out of my system until version 5 is out, hopefully the next version will have some features that will allow the newbies to have a fighting chance.

-Really, “noobies a fighting chance”? You have to crawl before you can run man, after 2 or 3 weeks of playing you get the hang of the jump system, you havn’t played till you’ve gotten the drop of 4 experienced players, knocked em all down with an MP5, then hopped onto their buddies with a DE pistol.

Don’t knock it if you arn’t prepared to do the learning curve.

I love this game, after about two months of playing it I am coming in first place consistently on FFA. All you have to do is keep practicing and switching servers when you’re stuck on a server with more experienced players.

Of course, I must say I’ve only done FFA, so I don’t really know what team-based deathmatches and stuff are all about. But it is a great game and I encourage you to try it.
