DVD Flick is a free, open-source DVD authoring tool that can convert and write almost any video file or files into a DVD (or ISO) playable on any hardware DVD player

This program will let you (a) combine a single file or multiple files into a playable DVD, (b) add subtitles, and (c) add secondary audio tracks. It has a number of definite strengths, as follows:

  • Simple, straightforward interface design. It is remarkable how simple and intuitive this UI is, especially for a DVD authoring tool. This alone is reason enough for me to switch to this program.
  • Will convert almost any video file, which means that you are extremely likely to be able to put any video that you may have on your hard drive on DVD. This is not to be taken for granted, as I recently tried to convert a video file to DVD using another favorite program of mine, AVI2DVD, only to find that it was not able to handle the audio.
  • A partial list of supported formats are as follows: AVI, MPG, MOV, WMV, ASF, FLV, Matroska and MP4. Supported codecs are amongst others, MPEG-1\2\4 (Xvid, DivX, etc.), Windows Media Audio\Video. MP3, OGG Vorbis, H264, and On2 VP5\6.
  • You can convert to ISO image on hard disk if you do need want to burn to DVD or there’s not one handy.

One thing that this program does not have is the option to create a title menu with custom backgrounds and/or music. My guess (from looking at the program’s feedback page) is that this will be coming in a future version. In any case if you must have this use AVI2DVD.

This is the kind of freeware program that you just love, simple and sleek and gets the job done. If you want a simple program to convert your video files to playable DVD’s, it doesn’t get simpler than this. Highly recommended for any user, but especially if you are not technically inclined and just want something that is easy to use and just works!.

Compatibility: Windows 2000 professional, Win XP (Vista not tested). P3 or higher or AMD K-6 or better. 64MB Ram minimum.

This program works well BUT you need to be careful : when it says it will delete all files in the target folder, it means it ! Therefore a recommendation would be that when you specify a target folder for output, make sure it does NOT exist at the start of the job. Then if you get a prompt warning that ‘Folder already exists, all existing files will be deleted, do you want to proceed ?’ your default action should be NO. I lost a pile of personal data the first time I ran it – my own fault and it was backed up. But you may not always be so lucky – so be careful !

This program is AWESOME and FREE! You need a seperate burning program, I used Nero. It worked perfectly with good quality, converting an AVI download to DVD. I tried DVD Santa, the quality was not good and the soundtrack didn’t match the film. Try it, you have nothing to lose.

I was shopping around for good commercial tools and stumbled on DVD Flick. DVD Flick ROCKS. It solves so many of the common problems I had. Almost all input formats are supported. Out quality is great. I just threw away all the tools I bought.

I took 1.5 hrs to convert an avi with a subtitle (.srt) to a dvd iso. But it worked perfectly on my dvd player.

  • Steve says:

Big disappointment. DVD Flick encoded my 15 minute avi video and indicated it finished, but would not burn to dvd. After two additional attempts, and trying it with a 5 minute video, still nothing. I have a brand new computer with loads of memory. The guide for DVD Flick is incomplete; no FAQ or trouble shooting information. I guess I can’t complain since it’s free, save the time I wasted trying to use it.

Very happy with this program. It just works! Encoding is not that snappy but other than that I have not had any problems.
I look forward to a richer feature set in the future.

I’ve been using dvd flick and every movie i burn skips. it starts off in chapter one. Five minutes into the movie and it skips to the next chapter. It only does it in chapter one. ANyone else encounter this issue?

I have been getting some really low quality burns with DVDflick. Horrible encoding, audio/video out of sync, large chunks of video missing. It’s unfortunate since the interface is great. Maybe the next major version will be better…

  • anon says:

it does support custom menu backgrounds you just have to make your own template in the dvd flick template directory

I HAVE HAD DVD FLICK FOR A YR. NOW AND WHEN I ADD A FILE DVD FLICK CONVERTS IT AND WHEN IT FINALISES IMGBURN AUTOMATICALLY BURNS MY DISC BUT WITH THE NEW UPDATES FOR SOME REASON IMGBURN IS NOT WRITING MY DISC WHY?.

  • notti says:

Great program. However, 6-channels audio is not encoded properly. Sounds are not coming out of each speaker as they should. If you want stereo or 2-channels, it is fine. This is the only thing that mars a good program.

DVD Flick works great for me, I’ve burned at least 100 DVDs with it & notice the quality variations are probably file related…GIGO!
Also, I hold the ‘High Scores’ in the ‘Entertain Me’ (Tetris) zone!

I’ve been looking around and trying some freeware to copy video files to DVD. This was one of the first i tried. It looks much more professional than alot of others and very easy to use, but i get the picture and audio out of sync like someone else mentioned. Others i tried were Cucosoft which was excellent and much faster, but you get a watermark in the middle of the screen (to encourage you to buy it – ie then no watermark). Another one which really is THE simplest interface there is, with no features but gets the job done well, is DVD Video Soft Free Video to DVD Converter. I tried others but they either didn’t work or were to finicky or you had to buy it after a few tries. Anyway i hope this helps.

I have burned many discs using DVD Flick. As many have commented, the audio and video is often out of sync on playback. Does anyone have any suggestions on how this problem might be fixed? Has anyone managed to resolve the problem and would post your magical solution here. The out of sync problem doesn’t always happen, but occurs more frequently than not. Otherwise, I would have to say that overall I really love using DVD Flick. It is easy to use and except for the audio/video sync problem, I highly recommend it!

I have been using dvd flick. On every movie that i have converted and burned with the program the volume does not match the video. The video is a second or two ahead. Any ideas on how to fix this?

  • TheBurner says:

Have always used DVD Flick, never had a problem, audio and video always match, volume no problem, can’t understand why people are getting this problem. I use it to convert and burn .avi files.

No body else has mentioned the problem I am having. In the middle of the encoding, my whole computer shuts off. What the hell is that about? I know you can set it to shut down upon completion, but I haven’t selected this, and it’s right in the middle. Any help with this one?
