.

I gave-up DiskKeeper for Smart Defrag and have never looked back !

And, yes, background (constant) defragmentation has to be tough on a hard drive.
Not to mention unnecessary.

I use the "Deep Optimization" option on Smart Defrag usually once daily on my
64-bit Vista machine, my 32-bit Vista machine, and my XP netbook. Other folks
defrag once/week and it suffices for them.

My laptop harddisk was 335 fragmented.

Smartdefrag has brought it down to 11%.

Going to single digit soon..

This user friendly tool is a must have

I also use "Power Defragmenter"

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Power-Defragmenter.shtml

which is a GUI front-end for `Contig by Sysinternals` because it allows defragging at folder, or even single file, levels - works well (more successfully as well as more quickly) on my 18Gig folders instead of my 200Gig drive.

As far as I can see constantly defragging your hard drive cannot be a good thing. I'd think this would seriously reduce the life of your HD.
