Visual Task Tips is a lightweight shell enhancement utility for Win XP that provides a Vista-style thumbnail preview of a minimized window in the task bar simply by placing the mouse arrow over it.

Here’s what you need to know about this software:

  • A very small program that takes very little resources
  • Does what it promises to do very well. I will say, however, that in some instances of minimized browser pages it displayed a thumbnail preview of a previous page rather than the current one (it eventually refreshed to the actual page).
  • Is 100% free.

The author’s website states that this software may have problems previewing some draw themselves in unusual ways to improve performance, a limitation which apparently cannot be worked around. I’ve used this software for a few days now and have yet to encounter this (even for MS Word, I might add, which the author’s website sites as one example of such applications).

I love shell enhancements, and I really like this program; if you’re like me you will will too. I recommend it highly.

Compatibility: Windows XP.
