Undelete Plus is an award winning free program that can recover deleted files after they have been deleted. It can also wipe files that remain on your hard drive so they cannot be recovered.

You are looking for a file all over your hard drive, when it suddenly dawns on you that you had accidentally deleted the last version of it. What to do now?

Enter Undelete Plus, a small utility that will scan your hard drive for all files that can be undeleted and attempt to salvage the file for you.

Sounds like magic? It isn’t. You might not know it, but when you tell Windows to erase a file, Windows essentially does something like say “okay, I am now going to consider this file null and void, and will allow other data writing operations to use the space that it occupies”. In other words, no actual ‘erasing’ of the file occurs until Windows has a need to write over the hard drive space that the file resides on. Undelete Plus and programs like it do a thorough scan for files that are ’still there’ on the hard drive and/or files that have enough data remaining that they can be salvaged.

Needless to say the sooner you attempt to recover the file the better your chances; also, smaller size files have a higher chance of being salvaged, and disks that have not been defragmented are better candidates for file recovery.

More features:

  • Undelete Plus will recover deleted files from hard drives (FAT12/16/32,NTFS/NTFS5), floppy disks, CompactFlash, SmartMedia, MultiMedia and Secure Digital cards.
  • It will also recover deleted files from network drives.
  • After scanning your hard drive, Undelete Plus will create file-type icons on the left margin that allow you to easily filter by file type
  • Undelete Plus will also allow filtering by size, date modified, and parts of the file name
  • You can use Undelete Plus to securely WIPE files so that the are removed for good from your hard drive.

Undelete Plus is freeware at its best; small, useful, practical, and powerful.

freeware description does not give size in KB/MB.

    This software isn’t free!!!

  • Samer says:

This software is 100% FREE. I have used it for a while now without ever encountering anything that suggests otherwise. I even went to the developer’s site looking for a way to pay for it, like an order form or something, and found nothing.

  • Martin says:

You need to install the software in order to undelete, this action may destroy the chance of undeleting the file you want! Try Restoration by Brian Kato.

  • Genius says:

Installation can be done where you choose.

    This is just amazing!!!

Great software! Recovered a ton of files after accidentally deleted a folder. Awesome!!!

  • Danno says:

Free is misleading. Be cautious; I spent a day detecting missing files, and a couple of hours handpicking duplicates and unwanted files – then clicked “Recover” which is when I was told “insert $50 to recover your files”. A not the best way to win people over – better warn them first.
I only paid because otherwise they had wasted my time.

    Danno,
Undelete Plus is free as in 100% free as far as I know. The version I tested for this review (2.2) was 100% free, and the version I just downloaded after your comment is also free; I tested this one (v.2.94) and was able to recover deleted files no problem, no payment requested.

I have even sent an email to the developers asking them to confirm the program’s “free” status.

I wonder if in fact the program you downloaded, used, and paid for is not “undelete plus” but something else perhaps?

In any case, should the program cease to be free I will post a link to download the last freeware version on this page.

I take that back – apologies. I somehow ended up installing ParetoLogic’s Data Recovery Plus which, as described, cost me money and did a terrible job. Great site Samer, very useful!

  • Astra says:

It’s always a great idea to have a solid data protection plan, consisting of regular backups and advanced file recovery software, in place. Trying to salvage data AFTER accidently deleting files may not always work if those files are overwritten and the last backups don’t reflect modifications made since. Good file recovery software is extremely useful.

Looks good, let’s see if it runs from a Thumb Drive!

  • Mike says:

It was free on v2.94 but no anymore on v3.x.
I’d recommend Restoration by Brian Kato. It’s totally free and small size (229K). (though its interface is not so fancy as other paid ones)
