Folder Size

FolderSize Screenshot

Folder Size is a free utility that displays the size of folders in Explorer folder windows alongside file sizes. Works with Windows 2000 and XP, does not work with 64-bit Windows PCs.

Rating: 55 Star Rating

Version tested:  2.3

Despite the fact that I know that Windows does not display the folder sizes in explorer windows, I somehow manage to be surprised every time I need the folder sizes, look for them, and find that they are not there. This program will finally put them there (see screenshot).

How to use this program: After installing, open any folder explorer window to ‘details’ view, right click on the column header, uncheck the original ‘size’, check ‘foldersize’, and move that column to where you want it to be. Next go to the tools menu, folder options, ‘view’ tab and click on ‘apply to all folders’.

Not much more to say about this, except perhaps a big thank you to the developer.

Go to the download and install page for the latest version. The Program home page.

As of version 2.4, it appears that 64-bit support is included.

    I use this one instead:

It’s cheaper and has much nicer charts.

Aurionix FileUsage 1.1.3 does the same plus includes percentages. The home page is gone but I put a copy at http://rapidshare.com/files/248777722/FileUsage_1.1.3.rar It is probably still available at a lot of the archive sites but you never know. I’ve been hunting for the 2.4.09b build of SideSlide because the 3.x versions don’t play nice with ShowMyPC. Lots of hits, no valid download links.

Damn useful for such a simple utility. Now let’s see if I can free up some space on my hard drive.

Very helpful. I’ve already cleared up several gigs of space which I couldn’t easily identify before was being used up by stuff I didn’t need. Excellent.

Wow ! This is a wonderful program. Quite and quick. Some more info on it:

Q: How to show sizes in MB, GB, TB, etc. for larger folders?
A: This option exists, and is accessible from the Folder Size in Control Panel.(Control Panel>Folder Size)

Yes, but ~not~ Vista or Win7 …which together account for 95% of all 64-bit Windows !

Mediocre. Very heavy on disk usage, severe slowdown. The functionality integrated with DMEX is far superior.
