How to download videos from Youtube or Google Video and convert them to Ipod MP4 format.

[This page last updated Dec 9th, 2006]
I’ve noticed people are searching for this. Here are some solutions.

For Google Video:Google Video Screenshot
Google Video now allows you to download videos straight into MP4 Ipod video format (see screenshot). My advice to you if you have a lot of videos already downloaded is to simply re-download in the MP4 format.

For YouTube
The Vixy web site provides an online conversion service that is fast and efficient (click here for a review of Vixy on Freewaregenius).

Another, less elegant solution is as follows:

If you already have a lot of .FLV files downloaded and do not want to re-download
You could convert your .FLV files into MP4’s in any of the following ways:

  • Use Mediacoder to convert .FLV into MP4’s (Mediacoder is a freeware universal video and audio format converter).
  • Use Riva FLV Encoder to convert .FLV into .AVI, and then re-encode the .AVI to .MP4 with Free Ipod Video Converter
  • IF you do not want to do the above you could go to the Media-Convert site and they will do the conversion for you. You will have to wait for the file to upload, convert, and download again though. The file has to be a maximum size of 50megs, however, as they do not accept file sizes over that.

If you have other ideas on how to do this, please leave your comments below!

    Hey guys,
I have an iMac G5 running tiger 10.4.7 and I an having a wierd problem. Whenever I go to a site that has an embedded youtube, flash or some kind of video, there is no sound. If it a quicktime file there is no problem. There is not sound no matter what broswer I use, firefox, camino, safari, or shiira. And keep in mind that about a week ago I was not having this issue.

    Help Would be awesome
    Thanks!

Hey man… I’m afraid I can’t help you. I may be the freewaregenius, but I know nothing about Macs. Sounds like a codec problem to me though… try reinstalling your codecs.

    I need help,
I have an app that contains an embedded browser.
Up until recently, I could navigate to Google Video and watch videos within the app.
Now when I attempt to load a video page, the app shuts down, without warning - just ***gone*** - every time.
This doesn't happen with YouTube.com or Yahoo Video, just Google Video.
Something about their page changed recently to cause this. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Is there a way to add mp4 movie files to an iPod without using iTunes? I tried yamipod and it seems to only work with audio files. Thanks.

ExtractVideo.com allows you to download and save videos from YouTube, Metacafe and Break directly to your computer. Even more, you can search YouTube.com and download videos you like!
