Spyware Terminator
This is one of the most exciting free programs I’ve come across in a while. Finally a very good antispyware program that you can install and forget, knowing that you have effective real time protection with automatic live updates.

This might not sound so revolutionary but it is, because most good freeware antispyware programs, including well known titles such as Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, and Spyware Blaster do not feature automatic updates unless you switch to the paid version. For me this always meant that there really isn’t a good freeware antispyware, and that a better option would be the (commercial) SpySweeper or Spyware Doctor. Until now, that is.I’ve been using this program for a while and am very satisfied with it. My brother recently had a nasty spyware infection that some of the other (free + non-free) antispyware programs could not effectively handle, but that Spyware Terminator resolved beautifully.
Note: Spyware Terminator integrates a free open source antivirus software named ClamVir to scan your computer. Although this is a good feature that I recommend, ClamVir does not offer memory resident antivirus protection and you should not consider it to be sufficient antivirus protection. (I.e. use Spyware Teminator for Spyware protection and install another Antivirus program for protection against viruses).
The following are some of Spyware Terminiator’s features:
- Fast Scan, Full Scan, Customized Scan, Scheduled Scan
- ClamAV antivirus integration (including ClamAV database updates)
- Effective removal of threats, including blocked files on reboot. Quarantines threats. Allows removal of locked files
- Real Time Protection with autmatic live updates.
- HIPS function monitors files for suspicious changes and asks user to intervine if changes to system are not recognized in it’s database.
- File analysis option allows sending of suspicious files to the developers for deep analysis.
- Restore computer to earlier or default setting

My antispyware of choice, it’s free and does a great job catching spyware. Used with spybot and adaware, and you shoul be pretty safe from spyware.

While I enjoyed the program, I found that, running as a background process, the program ran between 65,000K-95,000K. It was great at what it did, but I’m not willing to sacrifice that much for one program.
I found this article on a Google search. It seems to be a pretty thorough review – and is not so favorable to this software. It worth looking at.

I have recently been advised by Spybot that you can arrange it to do automatic updates.
Note: The auto update feature of SpywareTerminator does not seem to work—numerous posting on the forum to identify this problem but no solutions.
I use downloaded this and it found a lot of spyware in my computer.
This is a great program and I recommend it to all of you who have spyware.
Someone on a forum told me that the company behind it, Crawler.com,is making adware and thus this software is spyware itself ? Is that true or false ?
I read always very good reviews about it, but I’m unsure to install it.
I also have SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard and a bunch of other freeware anti-spyware applications installed.
this spyware terminator is really good,
and for real time antivirus from clamav, you just need to turn on the HIPS protection, then you can turn on the clamav realtime protection.
and after i use it for several months, it work good, but need to click allow so many time, and need to turn on the installation mode every time yo install a program or want to copy very big data to other computer in your lan (this only when you activate HIPS).
spyware terminator also not a resource hog, only taken 2 mb of my ram size. but it takes resources if you do manual scan with “full can antivirus” otherwise it is lightweight.
and yes once the crawler toolbar with its web security guard BHO was questioned as adware, but after several months of review, they take it of from “suspected as adware”, because they found no proof that it is actually advertising anything/pop-up things. and anyway the crawler toolbar is not mandatory, you could by pass the download, but in return your browser won’t be protected from adware’s (anyway this WSG only works for IE, new firefox will still not protected).

I’ve been very impressed with SuperAntiSpyware (despite the goofy name). It’s never failed to clean a system when scan runs in safe mode, and updates are automatic and frequent, with low system footprint. http://www.superantispyware.com

its Crawler toolbar and automatic update prevents FireFox 3 from running, the error box says FireFox crashed.

Personally, I do not like the Crawler toolbar and do not even install it. I probably should mention this in the review.
DO NOT USE ANYTHING FROM CRAWLER.COM. EVEN AFTER UNINSTALLING IT, IT HIJACKS THE BROWSER AND TAKES TO THEIR SEARCH…AND i CANNOT GET RID OF IT.

1. open firefox, type in “about:config” in the keyword box (address bar).
2. search for “keyword.url”
3. right click on the URL and select “reset”
