The famous Gestation Video

Not freeware, but a free video nonetheless. Check out my friend Matt’s famous “Gestation Video”, for whichThe famous Gestation video he hired a model to help him out (No, no, just joking, its his wife Carlin!).

This video has totally taken off beyond their wildest expectations. Its been #1 on YouTube and #3 on Google Video. It’s been featured, to quote Matt’s blog on “CNN, Extra, the homepage of Wired, in The Daily Mirror over in England, in other unnamed print publications”. They’ve also been featured on Good Morning America, Inside Edition, CBS Early Show, and the Seattle PI.

ALPass

ALPass Screen ShotRating: 44 Star Rating

Rating:Version tested: 2.6 beta1

ALPass automates the process of form-filling passwords to log into various websites/services. Unlike others in this category, such as AIRoboform, ALPass is 100% free for unlimited logins. It is a very small memory-resident app that can be accessed through the tray-icon, and pops-up whenever it recognizes a password-entry form.

Unlike Roboform, this program isn’t designed to fill every type of form that you could ever come across, only passwords. Which is just as well, because (a) that is 99% of what I found I was using Roboform for, and (b) the Google toolbar, which I always use, has pretty good standard form-filling functionality built into it anyway.

Comodo Firewall

Comodo Firewall ScreenshotVersion tested:  2.3.5.62

Another program in Comodo’s stable of free software is it’s Comodo Firewall, which provides protection against trojans, identity theft hackers, malicious scripts, and other external and internal threats.

I am a sucker for software that looks really cool and professional and is effective to boot, all of which can be said about this one. From what I’ve read in multiple sources the level and sophistication of this software’s protection is very high.  Read more »

Spyware Terminator

Spyware Terminator Screenshot

Version tested:  1.5.00.740

This is one of the most exciting free programs I’ve come across in a while. Finally a very good antispyware program that you can install and forget, knowing that you have effective real time protection with automatic live updates.

This might not sound so revolutionary but it is, because most good freeware antispyware programs, including well known titles such as Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, and Spyware Blaster do not feature automatic updates unless you switch to the paid version. For me this always meant that there really isn’t a good freeware antispyware, and that a better option would be the (commercial) SpySweeper or Spyware Doctor. Until now, that is. Read more »

Version tested:  1.8.5

Ever had a file or folder refuse to be deleted or renamed? This most likely happens because another program or process is still in memory and still accessing that file or folder.

Unlocker is a nifty utility that enables you to “unlock” files or folders that are being held by other processes and is easily accessed in the context menu through a simple right click.

This is a very useful utility that enables batch renaming of files and folder. It’s got a wide array of powerful functions/features that you can access through a dashboard-type control panel.

ExtractNow

Version tested: 4.29

Let’s say you want to keep the programs installed on you machine to the minimal possible number. You’re not interested in clogging your machine with all sorts of stuff that you do not need, and when it comes to compressing/archiving to zip you’re quite happy with the default windows support. Even the zipped folder icons look pretty cool straight off the bat on XP.

The problem with this scenario, however, is that there is a proliferation of archive format on the net that you will come across and need to be able to extract, most notably the popular .rar format but also a handful of others.

Enter ExtractNow, a nifty little utility that supports the EXTRACTION (but not compression) of the most popular archive formats on the net. It also supports batch extractions so you do not have to do them one by one manually.

RocketDock

Version tested: 1.2.5

I’m perfectly happy with my Windows machine. I don’t want a Mac. If I got a Mac as a gift I would probably return it and get a PC instead.

That being said, I am all ga-ga over this Mac OS X style launcher, probably the best of its kind. I’m using it on both my work and home laptops and am very pleased with how practical the thing is. It can be placed on top or on the side of the screen, and can disappear when not used yet be handily accessible through a hover of the mouse. It also features more different style options (skins) than anybody would know what to do with. Read more »

FolderMarker

This is a nifty utility that I use at work. If you’ve ever felt like you’d like to differentiate some of the folders that you work with or make them stand out from the rest, this software can help.

Foldermarker is a very small program that allows you to change the color and/or appearance of your folders straight from the context menu. It also allows you to load and use your own custom folder icons. Very handy!

Comodo AntiVirus

Comodo AntivirusRating: 55 Star Rating

This post last updated: Nov 7, 2006

Version: 1.1beta

Description: Comodo promises to be a complete install-and-forget antivirus solution that it 100% free.  This is beta software, so before you install and use this software please read the rest of this posting.

I have been using this software for a while now and I must say I am satisfied with it, so far it seems to be delivering what it promises. However, I will say that this software is in beta and this sometimes shows in the form of unexplained crashes and quirky behavior.

This program feautures (a) real time protection, (b) incoming/outgoing email scan, (c) automatic updates, (d) virus scans on demand, and (e) it also promises powerful heuristic detection of unknown viruses (i.e. a type of smart detection whereby an unknown virus is identified based on its behavior).

Comodo also does not seem to require a lot of resources to run. This is good, as my biggest peeve about many antivirus programs is that they can be so resource intensive as to literally slow up a fairly decent spec machine (Norton and McAfee spring to mind). Happily, from both what I read as well as well as my experience so far, this software does NOT seem to be a resouce hog.

But I do have a number of complaints about this program, all related to the fact that this software is still a beta release. Read more »

GOM Player

GOM Player is a freeware player for DVDs and Video Files.

  • It offers advanced features and a really slick look-and-feel
  • Comes with its own resident codecs, meaning that you WILL be able to play pretty much every format without needing to find, download, and install different codecs for different formats.
  • Also purports to have patented technology that allows you to play partially downloaded files! I haven’t tried this, but it sounds good to me.
